Bottle neck?

I am feeling that my desktop is not preforming the way that i want it to but i feel that i have some very good hard wear. I just don't know where it is slowing down.

What i have is
PQI 184pin 2x512 memory sticks
EVGA 512-P3-N841-AR GeForce 8800GTS (G92) 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Toledo 2.4GHz Socket 939
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD3200KS 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 SLI-DR 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail


What i assume is that my single gig of ram is holding my computers preformance back but i am not sure. I want your oppinion before i order something i dont need.

I also wanted to add that on my 320gig HD i partitioned it into 3 parts which was pobably not that smart, on top of that one partition is 88% full and the others are about 20%
would wiping the computer and reinstalling everything make it run better? Also is one big partion better than 2?

Yea you are spot on. Your video card is very mismatched for the system. The RAM and Processor aren't making full use of it. Upgrading to 2GB or even 4GB would show you a huge increase in performance. Also, if your chipset will allow it, upgrade to a phenom or phenom 2 or atleast to a higher clocked Athlon 64

he has a socket 939 motherboard so thats limiting his choice of upgrade unless he wants to upgrade his motherboard aswell.

AMD processor production stopped for Socket 939 in May 2006,so i think it would probably be hard to get new 939 processors but you should be able to pick up used on ebay.

The only problem with the ram is that i need 184 pin and it seems that the price is much higher for the 184 pin than the 200+pin. Why is that?

of course yeah sorry:rolleyes: your using DDR ram,its more expensive because its older.

you could get two of these

but tbh you would be wasting your cash on upgrading that system with that motherboard because its still going to hold you back.

you might aswell just save up for a new cpu,motherboard and memory.

This is your best choice by far. Do not spend any more for parts for what you have. The performance increase would be minimal. You would get alot more for your money if you go with this upgrade. Plus it will last you for another year or so. Save up if you have to, it will definitely be worth it.
 
Well i was able to find a old set of ram from one of my friends so now i have 2gigs total with 4 512 sticks. Now comes wiping and reformating the system.
