Bottleneck GPU?

Hello. I finished building my system in my sig. I played crysis, and I can only play at 1024X768 resolution and with medium settings. Even with that, the game lags, say when I have to jump over something (I'm using the demo to give it a try). I don't expect max settings or anything, but shouldn't I be able to play at 1280X1024 or something?

So, I was wondering if my CPU is bottlenecking my 8800GT. I'm not much for overclocking, but if it is bottlenecking, I'd be willing to replace the cpu with another. Would this cut it:

It's 2.8ghz with 512 cache

or is this phenomenally better:

This one has 1 mb cache per core.

I may not play Crysis, as it's not quite my type of game, but I use Crysis to judge how ready my system is for some future games. I'm waiting for Mafia II and, assuming it's released for pc, GTA4. I don't know, maybe Crysis will be harder on a pc than Mafia II?

Like I say, I don't expect top-of-the-line graphics (especially on Crysis), but I'd like to play at 1280X1024 with the highest settings possible, or whatever the card can handle (I just don't want the cpu to hold 'er back). Thanks!

From what I understand Crysis isn't very CPU intensive so it will be the GPU holding you back. I have the same CPU and GPU and like you run at 1024x768 and medium. I also run 8x AA.

Huh, ok. That could be. I can't run any AA though. I'm on a 17" monitor, if that makes much of a difference.

Strange you can't run AA. What happens? Monitor size won't have anything to do with it.

I'm using the 174.74 beta driver.

Well, everything is pretty glitchy, like the framerate drops a ton. Nothing looks pretty at all, either. The water looks pretty good, but plants in the wind are very glitchy, for example. I'm not trying to be picky, but at the moment, Mafia 1 (made in 2002) looks better than this game while playing on my system.

i the exact same card as you with a 5200+ i havnt had any problems at all i have set my crysis on very high obviously my FPS dropped alot but it ran smooth and all.. Does anyone think it could be a bad card?

Yeah, and sometimes it glitches on Mafia also, but I do have a mod on it that changes the cars to 60's cars and the poly count on those are high. I would think it would run that game on full also (made in 02). I've only had the card for around a month now.

Also, very rarely I'll get a black screen, but the mouse pointer will still work. Today it was a pink screen. Could it be a bad card? It hasn't overheated or anything, and I just redownloaded and installed the current driver from Nvidia.

Ok, well I found out that I've only owned this card for two or three weeks (time flys when your having fun) now and I guess it's still under waranty with newegg. Will they return it if it still works, but doesn't work like it should? I mean, I know that they will, but will they believe me? If I should be able to do what simon is doing, than something's wrong.

I'd suggest:
1)Download (Do not install yet) latest nvidia driver or give the beta a try.
Stable: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
or
Beta: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us
2)Download and install Driver Cleaner but do not run it yet - http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=745
3)Boot in safe mode and uninstall the nvidia drivers and any graphical tools that may have been installed.
4)Run Driver Cleaner to be sure all signs of the nvidia driver have gone.
5)Install nvidia driver.

See if that makes any difference.

Ok, well I tried that and it did make a difference. It doesn't glitch up nearly as much, so it's pretty smooth (running 1024X768 medium with 8x aa). Do you have texture draw distance problems? I mean, some times rocks and plants don't show up until I'm pretty close to them. The others that are there don't look very good until I get fairly close. I'll be driving in Crysis and think I'm going one way, but a rock will pop up in that path all of the sudden.

Instinct5 says that he runs it all very high....... He has a 5200+. Would I run better with around that speed processor? Thanks.

Crysis has not always but most of the time not like AMD cpus, the developers built it all around the intel core 2 duo and did all testing on the core 2 duo too, i have a core 2 duo yet to change my sig and a 8800 and im getting 25fps average everything on very high with aa. but as i said im running an intel, i think even at the beginning of the game it even advertises intel which dont help AMD users lol

Yeah, I downloaded fraps and checked my framerate. The average was around 26.5 with medium settings and 8x aa @ 1024X768 resolution.

What Core2duo do you have? What speed is it at (ghz)? Thanks.

i have the e6600 overclocked from 2.4 to 3ghz on stock cooling and only runs 2c hotter lol

And there's no possible way that maybe I need a faster CPU? Any recommendations?

Ok, that could be. But I just don't understand why Instinct5 can run on very high while I can't, if it's not the processor. He has the same card!

I'd say it would be your processor. I'm running it with high settings at 1680x1050 and getting 25-35 FPS with my 8800 GT.
