Hi everyone, I currently have a 5400 RPM sata drive and I bought a new 7200 sata drive. Can I just leave my old hardrive installed and put my new sata drive in and make it the primary hardrive? Something I can just do in the bios?

thx

matt

Yeah you can install it in your system, providing you have an open sata port and a sata cable and power cable for it.

As far as making the new drive the primary drive you would have to use software to clone your existing drive. What brand is your new drive?

its a WD, hmm why would I need to clone it? I just dont want to have to switch the hardrives in the bios every single time that I boot up

You need to clone all the data from your old drive to your new one, so that when you make your new drive primary, your computer can boot from it. If you don't, your computer will be reading from an empty drive.

Do you have Windows installed on the old drive? I assume you are wanting to put Windows on the new drive. You would need to format the old drive first then install Windows on the new drive or clone the drives like above has suggested.

If you clone the drive do you still need to keep your old drive in? I am looking at this also, I dont want to loose my Windows registration and have to buy another copy.

Also, I just installed a new "bulk" WD drive and it does not show up?

Cloning the old hard drive to the new one transfers everything that was on the smaller drive to the bigger drive so that you can use the bigger one as primary boot drive and then erase whatever is on the old one and possibly use it for storage.

The reason why it won't show up is because you have to go into disk management and create a partition and format it before it will show up.

Thank you, I was able to add my new drive. I am considering a new SSD for my boot drive and the informaiton is helpful.

hey guys!! :) how do I clone the drive? do I just create an iso on the old one and transfer it to the new one? or literally copy and paste the whole hardrive. i can not see cloning the drive being simple :(

I do not want to reformat, as the other user said... I dont feeling like reinstalling all my adobe programs and stuff

thx

Matt
