Bought SSD!

Can someone explain to me what an ssd is and does, ive Googled it but im still kind of confused. I just ordered my new build , and i wasn't really sure what an ssd would do along with two WD 7200 640GB Hdd that will run with raid 0

An SSD is a solid state disc. It's different from traditional mechanical hard drives in that it has no moving parts. All the data are stored on flash memory as opposed to spinning platters. It's a lot faster than traditional drives and has nearly no seek time.

^ that.

A traditional HDD has platters that spin at a certain speed and a spindle that reads the data off the platters as they move. A SSD does everything electronically. Read/Write times are *much* quicker, so basically as soon as you click to open a programs installed on the drive, it's open; you don't have to wait for the spindle to read the platters and find all the data chunks.

Best single upgrade you can do. Literally cut my boot time in half - Virus scans by two thirds. Only downside is that computers with regular drives will now make you irritated and annoyed.

lol, not literally ;)

nice :good: how does it do with games? other than loading times, do you notice any difference? i don't think it should, but does it at all?

Because of the size of most games I keep them on my storage drive, so, for myself, no difference. Some, though, if they have the capacity, put one or two of their favorite games on the SSD for faster load times. That's why it's good to get an SSD with enough capacity to hold more than just the OS + essentials. I have an 80GB, and I like to keep a good porportion of the drive empty to minimize write cycles to individual cells, but if I had a 120 I'd put some of my games on C:

My boot time really is half with the SSD. Hitting the button to a usable desktop went from 1:30 to 45 seconds. (I have a lot of peripherals.)

^ i wasn't saying that your boot time wasn't cut in half, i was just saying "literally" was incorrect there.

Damn I should have gotten one of these . Say I build my pc before I order a ssd and oc my cpu and set raid 0 with my hdds. Would I be able to just move my OS files to the ssd? Or do I have to reinstal to it and redo raid and the overclock?

Literally would be the correct term there, as it actually was cut in half(mine in fact was probably closer to 1/3rd the time as before, and that was coming from a 2 disc raid 0 array).

ooh, well, that one is kind of tough... i mean, the time was cut in half, but i don't think that is "literally" what happened since there was no "cutting" done in the literal sense (like with a knife)... i could be wrong though.

Cut has many definitions, one of which is "To reduce the size, extent, or duration of; curtail or shorten"

Solid State Drive ... there's no disc. Though, after checking on Google... one or two results said drive and disc for some reason.

Wow thanks for sharing with us. Never realized how much faster SSDs are. Honestly I thought the only benefit was the initial access time then they were about even with a spinning hard drive--not the case at all.

Maybe I'll consider picking one up. . . [checks price on newegg on an 80 GB SSD]. . . Woah!! Maybe not this year!

Besides the boot-up speed...what exactly are you gaining? I'm just not sold on these drives yet.

The amount of money you'll spend on it will cancel out 2-3 of the usual hd's. Assuming a hd went bad on you 3 times!!!

well to be honest i had a wd caviar black as my boot drive before my ssd and for normal use the wd black wasnt far off in performance terms.
but it was loud and got annoying when windows was doin its background reads/writes etc. Especially when watching a movie or whatever
