Branded or generic memory

I have a HP Pavilion ZV 5000 laptop. I want to add some memory. I don't game, but I do want as fast as possible, with out going overboard on the price. ;)

I went to the Crucial, and Kingston site's and used their memory finder's. Neither of those match what Newegg's finders say's. So wich one do I trust.

I think I want the Crucial, but just need to decide wich one. Would the not brand specific perform as well, or should I go with the brand specific. Kingston's choice is availeable on newegg, but crucial's is not listed under the exact part #. Any idea's. Thank's for any input.

BTW. This is my first post, and I'm a computer newb,,,,so take it easy on me if I left out some vital piece of information.. :D

After gonig in circles for way to long on HP's website (completely useless, don't go there if you can avoid it) I can find very little on the specifications of that laptop. What does newegg/crucial/kingston say it takes?

Actually all three of those are the same type of RAM, any of them would work. The differences are only the size of the RAM (256/512/1GB).

It also looks like you've changed the memory in it already. If you get a 1GB module you will have to remove the 256MB one already installed.

LOL,,,I did say I was a newb, so I got that response accordingly. But I am just a little bit more knwledgable than that. :D But not much. :P

I guess what I really meant by generic was going to someplace like Best Buy and just getting a 200 pin pc2700 stick off the self with out ever saying it's for this paticular HP model computer.

I talked to someone at Kingston, and they said the value line on newegg wouldn't work. I needed the branded type. But I THINK they're just trying to get me to but the more expensive stuff. Who know's.

What's confusing me is the Kingston's and newegg's finder's don't recomend the same thing, but newegg sells both part #'s. The Crucial stick seem's to be the most popular, and the best price. But I'm leary because of the old saying,,,"If it's too good to be true".

Here's the one I'm talking about.

Did I make it anymore confussing, or do you get what I'm talkin about,,,lol. Thank's.

For PC2700, you shouldn't have compatability issues. I think PC3200 was a little hit and miss on laptops but getting the generic stuff at bestbuy would probably work.

That crucial stick looks OK to me.

I know a few years ago, HP used to be very picky about what memory they liked and didn't like, not sure what they are like today but would assume not as picky. In the last few years i've used and only used corsair memory and have not had any problems with any builds or upgrades. I don't see why corsairs valueselect series wouldn't work in that laptop.
