a while ago i broke a hard drive while removing it from one of my computers to test out one i was building. it shows up when i plug it back in but says its broken and to retrieve the data on it (no need only just installed xp on it).
does anyone know how to fix it or any possible reasons why its broke?
all i know is its from exelstor, sorry thats all i understand about it.

what do you mean by broken, you broke the drive as in the pins connecting cables etc, or you have corrupted the system or damaged sectors of the disk.

the pins are ok and i cant see any physical damage done to it. i remember having a hard time removing it from the computer and bashed it around a bit but i cant see any damage.

If you "bashed it around", that is very likely what did it. Hard drives are quite fragile, as they are manufactured with a very small engineering tolerance, so any impact can throw them off and cause them to cease functioning. When this happens, there's not really anything you can do.

only thing you could try is a low level format, or one of the special repair tools most hard drive manufacturers supply for free download, then try reinstall, what make is your hard drive ?
