Broken Laptop suggestions please

My mom's laptop recently went bad and after getting a new one she gave me the broken one. The USB ports all went dead and then the keyboard was no longer being recognized. This is the laptop http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/hp-pavilion-dv8000/4507-3121_7-31563915.html

Any ideas for what I could do with it? Can anything be salvaged or is there any way to use the screen as a monitor with another computer?

probably RAM, Hard drive, Modem, and battery. touchpad, screen, anything that PCI card. most things really.

If the computer still works, just the screen won't then, yes, you can use another monitor.

The screen still works actually. Everything works except for the Keyboard and the USB ports.

ok, well if the mouse works, you can use the on screen keyboard, located in the accessories.

The mouse does not work either. I thought it was part of the keyboard.
Im in the US and I could see spending a few hundred if I could get it working again. However ideas that arent refurbishing it myself are welcome.
My mom had an IT guy at her job check it out and he described it as a "lemon"
