broken motherboard?

Hello out there

I just got my computer back, after having sent it to rep., with the message that my computers fail wasn't coverede by the guarantee.

I've got a HP Pavillion dv7, which was atound one year old when it began to fail.

The store where I bought told me that my computer failed do to a broken motherboard. They told me that it had broken because I had inserted the power plug to roughly in to the computer, and I can see that there is a crack at the area of the power plug-input, but is that really able to break the motherboard...?!

Big companies will often come up with any excuse to not honor a warranty. That being said, what exactly was happening when the computer started to "fail"? Generally what happens around the power plug is that the plug can break so that it no longer makes a full connection with the motherboard, and thus the laptop can no longer be charged. Typically this is a gradual process. At first you might have to wiggle the plug a bit to get it to charge, then it will get to the point where the plug has to be in exactly the right spot to charge, and eventually you wont be able to charge at all. Is this what happened in your case?

If this is the case, then it's often not covered by the warranty. While it's possible that the port on the motherboard was not well constructed and might be able to be easily broken, it still takes a certain amount of excessive force on your part to cause this to happen. Still, it can be fixed. It's somewhat of an advanced repair, and if you take it to Best Buy they will tell you that you need to replace the entire motherboard, however there might be a small computer shop near you that would be willing to just replace the charging port.
