Brother downloaded a virus.

Brother downloaded a good virus yesterday. He does not know how he downloaded it. It pops up at the lower right saying your infected etc... and it brings up the system scanner showing the so called virus you have. The program wont X off or move. I can do absolutely nothing until (somebody stupid puts their credit card number in and pays them money)
Right now i am in safe mode and it does not show up. First when i saw it, it did not show up all the time so i had a little time to investigate. It posted a icon on my desktop and i went to the file location and deleted everything and then went to the programs and clicked uninstall. It then said you must have moved it etc and asked if i wanted to continue to delete and i clicked yes. That is as far as i have gotten and it seems to still be installed!:eek:
Any help?
 
First run in safe mode and then enable viewing of hidden folders on windows explorer and then navigate to C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData (should be there :L ) and then look for a file which will be a bunch of random numbers (may have letters in it) .dll and then delete these.

Please note; this will not fully rid you of the virus but it will not be of any bother anylonger
 
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If for some reason Malwarebytes will not install or run please download and run Rkill.scr, Rkill.exe, or Rkill.com but DO NOT reboot the system and then try installing or running Malwarebytes. If Rkill (which is a black box) appears and then disappears right away or you get a message saying rkill is infected, keep trying to run rkill until it over powers the infection and temporarily kills it. Once a log appears on the screen, you can try running malwarebytes or downloading other programs.



Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

Your help is greatly appreciated. That program found it and i believe it is gone now. I can now start up and see no sign of it. That program found 3 in the registry.
This program seems nice. Is it one i should buy? I do need a anti virus. The only thing i have been using is spybot.
 
Did you follow all of the instructions johnb35 posted? If you want to be sure you are rid of any malware you need to finish the instructions wherever you left off.

Do as gamblingman says and finish the instructions if you have not already, then go and download and install Avast! from here:

http://www.avast.com/en-gb/free-antivirus-download

No matter what AV you have, you are still susceptible to getting a virus, but it reduces your chances a hell of a lot and makes clean up much easier. Avast! is free, very light, and very, very good at what it does

As said before, please post the logs requested so we can be sure you are clean and have no other security risks that you are running.
 
Tried to do the hijack but first i get this:

Right click on hijackthis on your desktop and click on run as administrator and it should run properly.

You are clean for now. You definately need to run an antivirus, either AVAST or Microsoft Security Essentials.

I also recommend to stop using Spybot and run Malwarebytes every few days after updating it of course as it doesn't auto update.
 
I would not doubt that he is looking at porn....He is 15. I did look at the browsing history and i do not think he knows how to delete it. All i see is mainly gamer sites, he looks at like forums and xbox game reviews.
