Brothers computer fried. Fix, replace, or new build?

DO NOT USE THE ROSEWILL. If you do buy a prebuilt, upgrade that immediately. If the PSU goes there is a high chance it will take all those other nice parts with it. It's much better to be safe then sorry.

As for the i5 vs the AMD, the multi threaded applications will definitely benefit from the AMD. When it comes to single threaded things the i5 will have a slight edge but not enough to want to get it over the AMD. AMD's built in GPU is still much better then Intels but I will admit Intel is catching up.

Well at that rate I'd have to fork over the cash myself to purchase like a CX430 instead and just use the rosewill PSU as a bench unit.

The bundle is only saving 20 dollars, so instead break the bundle and get the PSU that you want. The CX430 is trouble some. I have had many issues with them that I have just started sticking the Corsair Builder Series Modular CX500M in the builds instead.

What do you think?

That's an awesome setup for the money man. It will be more then enough for the next couple years. I promise you the extra money on the PSU will be worth it knowing that everything will be safe. I wouldn't change any of the parts :)

Why are you getting the 600W PSU? May as well get the CX 430M if he's not using a dedicated graphics card or not needing one in the future.

I advised against it. I have built several computers with that PSU and they have come back to me because of it. Unfortunately they cannot be trusted so I suggested a 500w but currently the 600w is the same price so I chose that instead.

Now that the replacement PC is sorted out, what do you figure I need to see if the old PC is salvageable? It smells like the PSU was the problem, but I think it might have taken the ram with it, and DDR2 is expensive.

Eh fair enough but I've built two PCs with that PSU and not had a problem.

I built about 10 computers with the CX430 before I switched to using the CX500M's. 3 out of those 10 came back to me with a dead powersupply. Thats way too high for my liking, plus I don't like the headache involved in switching it out and getting a new one. I have built about 5 since with the CX500m without issue.

Even though the CX430 is a CWT unit. Its a pretty lowend power supply. Corsair really over rates the supply. Dumps alot of watts on the 3.3/5V rail. Really only has 336W on the 12V rail.

buy the dell you linked in the 1st page. its got an i5, new 1tb drive, 6 gigs 1600mhz ram wifi new case all new....granted you could simply buy a set up like prebuilt bundles, but it easier through the dell I suppose given the added fact that it has windows on it already so....

Your brother should get a Seasonic or XFX PSU to protect his investment. Other than that the list look good.
