Browsing Windows Network

I've got a really strange problem, and no-one else seems to have quite the same problem so I thought I'd post it.

I've been able to browse the network on my laptop since I put XP on it a few weeks ago, but now when I try to browse to absolutely anything it says "Windows cannot find '\\blah blah blah'. Please check the spelling" etc...
what's even more annoying is I can connect to another pc from my laptop via VNC and it works fine.
When I browse the workgroup it doesn't show anything in there at all, not even itself, File and Printer sharing is definately enabled, I have a folder shared, and it's definately an exception in the firewall.
Has anyone got any ideas on how to solve this? I'm stumped!

in what sense?
at the moment I am at work and there are about 50 different computers that I can't connect to, there is also domain here (that this laptop isn't on) that I can't connect to, it says it can't find the domain controller. I also have the same problem at home with 3 computers

im not ignoring you... im just pondering what could be wrong... at work you could have firewalls up.. but if you normally can log into work I wouldnt know... Do you have an IT guy that can come out and take a look?

I am the IT Guy :P well one of anyway... my boss has no idea either, he's just put it down to "another reason to use linux"
Which didn't help me
I do have permissions, I've used some of the shares on it before, and the permissions havent changed. but I can't view my pc at home either.

A more accurate description of 'blah blah blah' may help.

no it wont... I said "\\blah blah blah" because it is the name of what ever computer that I tried to connect to... therefore not important information so I didn't include it

Just for information, if I type in \\caspian (the name of my laptop) while I'm on it, it comes up with shared Docs and printers... but it isn't present in the workgroup folder.

It is usually a firewall problem. What if you use \\ip-address ?

when using the name, it either needs to resolve it by dns or broadcasting. The list of workgroup computers comes from the browsemaster. And you haven't fiddled with the netbios over tcp/ip settings?
