bsod constantly, memory problem

I think I need to downclock my memory from ddr3 1600 to 1333 but have no idea how to do that. When I had a 1333, i kept getting the bsod and all my applications kept failing. However, when i upgraded to 1600 and the original startup kept it at 1333, everything ran fine. Upon restart, it updated to 1600 and everything failed again. I tried to change the settings in the bios on my MSI motherboard, but I couldn't do it. The values were greyed out and unchangeable. Can anyone help?
 
Ok, we need to know a few things first.

1. what brand and model memory are you using?
2. what motherboard do you have?
 
It must be an issue with your overclock settings because 1600 can only be used if you overclock. However, I thought it would downclock to 1333 if you didn't. Maybe you have some bad ram.
