i am adding ram to a Dell Dimension from a generic 128mb DDR 333, to 512mb (2x256) kingston VR. the computer ran and everthing before, it was just a lil slow for him. NOW when i put the two new stick in(left old stick out, only 2slots) and try to boot i get this message...

"
a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

if this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. if this screen appers again, follow these steps:

Disable or uninstall any anti-virius, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Technical information:
***STOP: 0x00000024 (0x001901FF, 0x8126f0a0, 0xc000010z, 0x00000000)
"
the windows sign comes up for about 3 seconds and then i get that message. i have restarted/put the original stick of memory back in , but to no avail.
when i try to restart the "boot in safe mode selection comes up, but when i try to boot into that i get the same message.

anyone have any ideas?

This Stop message, also known as Stop 0x24, indicates that a problem occurred within Ntfs.sys (the driver file that allows the system to read and write to NTFS drives).

I'd suggest doing a repair with the other sticks of RAM ...

well the only thing i can think of, is to take out the drive and put it in an external case and do a check disk scan on it.

darn. i really hope i dont have to tell the guy,"well when i received your computer it worked. but not its broke..."

You can try to scan, but probably it's damaged beyond repair. A reformat or "repair" with a CD may be necessary...

well i'll try the scan while its in an external case. and if that doesnt work i'll just talk to him and suggest a full reinstall. thanks for your imputs oscaryu1.

No problem. I'd really try the repair though. Even if you get through with it, no telling how many files he lost... best off with a reformat to be safe.

well, i took out the HDD and put in an external drive. the volume properties shows 0 bytes used/free/and capacity. under tools when i try to tell it to do a scan disk and press "OK" the small window goes away and nothing happens.

/sad.

ya thanks lol.

dam this sucks. if i knew him better i would just be like. "yo, this is whats happening... cause i SAID SO!" lol

thanks for the ideas though guys

appreciate your time.

ive heard a little about software that can recover info from a corrupt or damaged HDD, such as this one. does anyone know anything about that. and/or is the kind of situation that that software would work in?

AWESOME!!! i used Active Partition Recovery and i can see all the HDD when its in an external case. only thing is, i dont know how to repair the mbr?

Well, you're just gonna have to look at the manual. I've never tried them, but if it can recover partitions, it can probably recover lost files... anyways, if it can't recove the lost file... there are other programs specifically made for that. If you have a small file missing, just do a repair.

:O someone just told me to get norton ghost and do a full Mirror of the drive and Ghost will repaire the MBR and then reformat the original drive. and reghost back to that drive :D. well i have nothing to loose as of now.
