got a BSOD indicating that "SAVRT.SYS" is the problem. I get a STOP 0x000000CE error messgae and DRIVER_UNLOADED_WITHOUT_CLOSING_PENDING_OPERATION. Ive tried to boot in last knwon good configuration, which failed and in safe mode which just hangs. Google search later tells me SAVRT.SYS is part of norton, however the system will not boot at all, so would my best option be to pull the hard drive and put it in a working machine to remove norton? im totally stuxk o this one, any help MUCh appreciated:eek:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

The problem seems to be caused by the following file: savrt.sys

DRIVER_UNLOADED_WITHOUT_CANCELLING_PENDING_OPERATIONS

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.

If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.

If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable componenets, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x000000CE (0xBAFC5842, 0x00000000, 0xBAFC5842, 0x00000000)

savrt.sys

Yeah I think the best thing you can do is what you said earlier, access the drive in another pc and remove norton.

i would get ur windows cd so u can get to the recovery console. to do that, boot from the windows cd, when the setup screen comes up type "r" to get to the recovery console. it might ask u for an administrator password, if u dont have one then just press enter, if u do type it in then press enter. now at the command prompt type "chkdsk /r" then enter. at the command prompt again type exit then enter to restart ur computer.

This might do the trick because one time my comp wasnt able to get into windows either and i did this and after i was able to get back into windows. let me know if it works.

Get a boot disk from bootdisk.com (win98se) and load to the a: prompt.

Change to the norton folder directory, and delete it. ;)
