Buffalo Network Hard Drive Fault

Hi all,

I'm having loads of problems with my Buffalo Linkstation Live LS-CHL2.0TL. This is a 2TB network hard drive which worked perfectly well until a month ago when the firmware required upgrading. I upgraded the firmware but can't for the life of me remember the admin password required to complete the upgrade. I've tried all passwords I've ever used and it doesn't appear to be any of them. So I tried resetting the device to factory settings and apparently I checked the box at initial set-up so the password won't reset. I played around with some java stuff that I found on the internet to try to remove the password but none of it worked.

I've removed the hard drive from the enclosure and removed the circuit board that was connected to it assuming that it was the circuit board which contained the admin details not the hard drive. After connecting the drive to my desktop it appears as 6 separate local disks and all are in the RAW format and can't be accessed without formatting.

I'd like to recover the data from the drive, approximately 800Gb of data. Does anybody know of a way to remove the data from the drive or remove the admin password from the device so I can once again access it as normal?

Please help!

Thanks,
Jamie

Nvidia GeForce 8600GS

Laptop with Windows XP
Core Duo (T2050) @ 1.6GHz
1Gb DDR 2 RAM

UPDATE: Someone has advised I use a program called UFS Explorer and it has allowed me to view the files on the drive which is a good start! The drive is showing as an SGI XFS file system if that is of any use to people. The UFS explorer won't let me copy data above 64KB without purchasing a license which I can't really afford at the moment so does anyone know of any free software that will allow me to copy the data from my hard drive?

No to your last, but you could try this link for a password resetting program. It has always worked for me. Runs from a bootable CDROM. I learned about it from a guy in Sweden.

http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/

That is for windows, he needs the password removed from the hard drive of a NAS. The NAS is most likely running some form of linux. In which case, OP is not going to be able to crack that password.

But there is good news for viewing the data. Most likely the drive is formatted in the linux standard ext2 or ext3. Try [url removed, see solution below] this utility and guide here to see if it allows you to access the data.

EDIT: Just read you said the drive is formatted xfs. Which is still a linux standard (so google tells me anyway). You will need to connect the drive to a linux based computer, or boot a live CD of linux to get your data.

Hi all,

I've managed to get all of my data off of the network drive which is good however I still can't access the Linkstation. Trying to upgrade the firmware results in a request for a password and no matter what I enter it always comes back with
"Couldn't pass to the aunthentication. Please confirm again admin-password of the Jamies_NAS".

I've done a lot of googling for similar issues and people are chatting about ACP_Commander and starting the device in EM mode. I've tried ACP_Commander but without a clear step by step guide I got lost very quickly. I followed the Buffalo guide to starting the NAS in EM mode but it didn't work.

So basically I've currently got a £130 paper weight which I would really like to get working again so if anyone has got any ideas or guides that might help, please let me know.

Thanks,
Jamie
