build a CAD/Rendering Computer from a server??

Im a student who regularly uses CAD and rendering packages, which take up alot of computer resources. I find my laptop struggles with this, and as I have good technical knowledge Im thinking of making my own PC specifically for this sort of work. Ive seen servers going very cheap on ebay, some of them have as many as four cpus, and often come with 6gb or so of RAM. The graphics card is usually built in and very poor though, maybe only 8mb memory etc.

Im wondering if I buy a server and fit it with a decent graphics card is this a good solution? apart from the noise/size of a server are there any other reasons not to use one as a regular PC? The ones I have looked into have slots suitable for a graphics card upgrade.

Thanks in advance,

Picky

looks like most servers have PCI-X slots, and not PCI-e slots used by modern graphics cards. I wasnt able to find any servers with a PCI-e slot.
