Build for non-gaming speed?

Okay guys, I don't how to ask this without sounding stupid, so I'll just ask it and sound stupid.

I want to build a faster computer than my current AMD Athlon 64 x 2 Dual Core 6400+. I couldn't care less about gaming. What I believe I understand about processors is that the high end AMD processors are just as fast, if not faster than Intel's quad cores for gaming, but Intel's HT technology makes them superior to AMD processors for everyday use.

Two questions:

1. Am I correctly understanding this?
2. If I am correctly understanding this, is there really that much of a difference in speed for everyday usage of a PC (internet research, online banking, homework printing, etc.) to justify the higher cost of an Intel?

I've always tried to buy AMD in the past because I believe that if it had not been for AMD, Intel processors would be causing a Dell laptop to cost $4,000 these days.

For my understand, intel quad core core i7 9xx are generally faster than AMD Phenom IIx 6 on gaming.

For your use, I don't see the need of getting expensive intel core i7.
BTW, you've mention $4000, what currency??

Are you after desktop or laptop??
What budget are you after?
