Build me a $500 game/family Comp

Please help build me a ~$500 game/family computer

Ok, so I might be able to build the next family computer in my house. It's a little bit of a long shot, but my parents don't seem completely against it, so it's pending at the moment...

If it does happen, it will be my first build. I'm confident in my knowledge, I've seen enough videos, and putting it together shouldn't be a problem. They'll be happy as long as it checks email, views photos and doesn't crash :) Anyway, it only needs to fit a couple guidelines:

VGA video card
DVD drive
If fans are needed, I'd like to include those.
Preferably a fast hard drive, capacity doesn't matter much.

$550 general budget, including the OS (XP home is fine)

Thanks a lot guys!

I don't really like that...for one the vid card doesn't have VGA, which the OP said he needed. Second, that mobo seems very cheap, and third, that processor is outdated, and not really the best value for the dollar. The case isn't great either...

edit: CPU- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819115005 -$184

Mobo- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131046 - $95

Ram- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145526 - $106

GPU- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814121008 -$103

HDD- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822135106 -$44

Optical- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827136103 -$30

case- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811119077 -$40

1) comes with a DVI to VGA adapter
2) that board is very stable and highly upgradeable
3) its a great CPU and he can upgrade to dual core in the future

its a 550 budget...

i agree with cuffless, double the RAM and keep the 7600GS, thats a better idea unless you want the gaming effects more to upgrade the RAM later

Guys it's a computer for surfing the web and checking emails. Drop the GPU down to like a 7300GS and grab an AMD X2.

yeah, but he said game/family comp

but that option looks good as well. we have to let Starswarsdude decide

and computermaineck, its a budget, and i dont think it would run too well without an OS and a HDD, but thats just me...i think it should work.

There's an HDD there...and I didn't include a few things, hence I said, "I'm just going to stop here." because I knew I was already overbudget.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I just wanted to get a good idea of what the build might be. And yes, it would be used for gaming, but also for my parents... a little confusing, I should have clarified.

i have a good setup saved on "my" pc for around 550 its a c2d build and its pretty much wat ur asking for ill get pack here tmmrw.

Lunch

that 7900GT rebate ended...

it's ok, I won't exactly be building it until a month or two from now. I just wanted a general idea of what I could get. I'll try and modify the lists when the time comes.

Once again, thanks for the replies guys. Any other opinions are welcome. :)
