Like most on the board, I'm looking into building a gaming rig, for the Crysis's, WoW's, and Witcher's of the world. Later on I may get into some light video editing.

My budget is $2800, which needs to include a monitor. Just looking for ideas as a friend of mine is putting it together, but I want to make sure Im getting the best I can get for my money.

that's a pretty large budget. you could cut it in half and still get a far better than average computer. or you could spend the extra $1500 and get like a 50" monitor ;)

if you want a top end i would say get
case-antec 900, great on cooling
cpu- e6850 duo core 3.0 ghz
mobo- a nice gigabyte one
videocard- 8800 GTX
get 4gb of whatever ram you like, i suggest corsair

Make sure you get a nice power supply, especially if you are running a high end graphics card. Good brands being OCZ and Antec, PCP and Cooling. 4 gigs of ram, yes.

Since your budget has a nice comfort zone get a good gaming mouse, I recommend the Logitech G5 here is the link

The antec 900 is a wonderful case, well advised footballdude2k3.
You may want a sound card added to you gaming system, everyone likes some nice audio to go along with the gaming. You can get a pretty good one for around $50 easy.

if you want to spend that much wait until the geforce 9 series come out, they are due out pretty soon in 2008. You can then buy a top of the line video card for a thousand dollars and meet your budget goal.

wow $2800 budget is almost maxed out on everything. i here is an estimate of what i would buy:

- Core 2 Extreme QX9650 $1100
- mobo $200
- 4GB memory $200
- 2x 8800GT in SLI 2x $250
- 2x raptor 180GB 2x $170
- x-fi prelude 7.1 $200
- monitor $300

that's almost $2800

$2800 is a pretty big budget. What kind of games will you be playing? Unless you want to play games like Crysis on max res and everything, you might want to save some money and not get the 9650 or a second video card. And if you are going to use two GPUs, you will want to use the best out on the market, not 8800 GTs. You'd want to use 8800 GTXs or 8800 Ultras (I know both of these cards are neck and neck.). Two 8800 GTs can't even measure up to one Ultra. And a $200 sound card for a gaming computer? No... you can save some of that money and get a more basic one.

you can go with a C2D E6850 or a quad core Q6600 processor and save some money. These processors are good for the money.

i agree about the soundcard, the only reason that you would need that is if you were doing sound editing, depending on the mobo i would either stick with that or get just a lower end soundcard, spend the extra money on something that you will use more

You forgot a power supply, and those graphics cards arent exactly amazing. Don't think the cpu will get into the build :p

[Just because the guy has a $2800 budget it doesn't mean use it all and waste his money]

Don't get 8 gigs of RAM like kungfumosquito has suggested. You do not need that for a gaming computer, 4GBs will suffice. He also does not need a $200 or a $140 sound card. A basic SC or a motherboard will good onboard sound will do for most gamers. I agree with the majority of the other selections made by kungfumosquito. Although, I like the Logitech G5 gaming mouse personally. If this is primarily a gaming system, the guy probably will not need 500gb of HDD space, so money can be saved there. And i dont know what DVD drive he picked out($80????), but i see lots of standard R/W DVD drives for like $30.

This will substantially save some money, hope it helps.

the xfi sound cards actually offload the some fo the work from the CPU and in tests show an increase of up to 10% in framerates so if you want top of the line gaming machine, go with a nice soundcard.

and no reason to skim 20 bucks off the hdd prive, the 500gb has a high density platter thus giving better access times, why not get the 500gb when you have such a large budget?

im not saying be wastefull, im jst saying with such a large budget going overboard is easy. Now dont get an 80 dvd drive though, thats just plain dumb

yea if hes doing this for games i would say go with the 8800 gsx or ultra

Yeah, a gsx is an engine, ;). Do nice soundcards really increase some framerate stuff by 10%??? This sounds like a myth to me.

And ride3k, it would be more that $20 difference for the harddrive, someone had a suggestion for dual 250gb HDDs and the average person would never need this amount of disk space. The man said gaming rig, not video editing machine.

yeah, soundcards that can do the audio encoding on their own can increase the frame rate, its not a myth.

and two 250's is a watse, if you want 500gb of space, get a 500gb harddrive, it will be faster than 2 250's

i just built a machine with SLI 8800GTX's, e6750, 500gb hdd, 4gb of CL4 DDR2 800 RAM, 680i mobo, xfi soundcard, 850watt psu and a 24" monitor for 2200 before tax and shipping. I dont know for sure but the psu might need to be upped but i doubt it
