Build me one?

Hey, been a while since I've been on. I've been places. :D

Anyway, I've missed a lot, including the Core 2 Duo release. I was wondering if someone could build me a Core 2 system, prefs ahead:

It will be used for medium gaming, so I would like it to handle oblivion well, as well as most future games.

It will also be used for some high res image editing.

I would like quick bootup, so a 10k drive would be nice.

Storage doesn't have to be huge, at least 160 gigs. Whatever is best for the price.

Program switching should be seamless, the dual core should take care of that along with at least 2 gigs of RAM.

Quiet but cool. This is a huge problem with my dell, it is super loud and hot.

Good looking, but not flashy. Something along the lines of the centurion, or any cases that look similar.

Sound card is taken care of.

Budget is between 1000-1500 USD, shipping and taxes included.

If someone can give me a nudge in the right direction I can probably do it meself, but again I've been taking a break so I'm sort of rusty.

*bump*

I've seen plenty of other conroe configs...at least you could point me to one that someone already asked for in my budget?

um..I guess I could if you wanted me to. I've always been wanting to do a high performance build.

EDIT:

Here's a quick config that I put together. Tell me if you like. I did it kinda quick so it might have some mistakes.

Cooler Master Centurion 5 CAC-T05-WW Aluminum ATX Mid Tower Case............$50

I didn't get a 10k drive but the HDD I got has 16MB of cache and it's a friggin 320GB.

that video card is too weak for that setup since the budget extends to 1500 get at least an x1900xt 512 that way there is no video card bottleneck.

I'm assuming this is all from newegg?

Cooler Master Centurion 5 CAC-T05-WW Aluminum ATX Mid Tower Case............$50

Looks good...

Antec TruePower II 550W Power Supply.......................................................$90

I remember finding another PSU that I heard was better for the price then the antec, if I find it I'll use that. If not then this.

MSI 975X Platinum Socket LGA 775 ATX Intel Motherboard..............................$230

Did a bit of research, and I'll probably get either of these two boards:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.40GHz 4MB Cache OEM Socket 775 Processor.............$360

Yay Core 2! :)

Zalman CNPS9500 CPU Cooling Fan/Heatsink.................................................$63

I already have a Thermaltake Big Typhoon sitting in my closet. Should work.

OCZ Gold 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 800 PC2 6400 Dual Channel Kit Memory.....$200
Will probably go with one of these:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231073

Seagate Barracuda 320GB 7200RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive..........$95

Since I'm not buying a hs and the RAM is cheaper, I'll go for a 10k drive. Probably a Raptor. But I'll also get the one you mentioned.

eVGA Geforce 7600GS 512MB GDDR2 PCI Express x16 Video Card.......................$150

I am debating getting a cheaper card like the one you mentioned or a 7600 GT and getting a decent 8 series card when they come out, or getting one of these:

Will I notice the extra 256 MB of memory?

Pioneer Black 16X DVD±R DVD Burner With 5X DVD-RAM Read...........................$33
Ok.

Any other thoughts? Comments?

you will notice the extra 256mb of memory but i dont think it will be all that profound if its already a good card like a 7900gt, correct me if im wrong.

Not really. The extra 265mb won't increase graphic performance by leaps and bounds. Right now it is not worth it.

Ok, got a more final list up:

SAMSUNG 16X DVD±R DVD Burner With 5X DVD-RAM Write and LightScribe

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10

eVGA 256-P2-N584-AR Geforce 7900GT KO

Rosewill RD600-2DC-SL 600W

G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2

Asus P5W DH Delux

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600

Case is being looked at. Total comes out to around 1400 after shipping and all.

3 questions though:

Do you think I should get RAM that works with both Intel and AMD systems?

Also, will the GPU work with the selected mobo, because it says it's crossfire ready. I'll still be able to use it, just not 2 of them right?

Finally, how future proof will this be?

um I think the RAM should work with both Intel and AMD and as far as future proof. It should be up to date for a couple years I would think.

Should I go with RAM that works with AMD and Intel?

Get the Asus p5b mobo, its a better mobo for a lot cheaper. And at least get like a 7900gt you can pick one up for like $240 after MIR.
And don't get the G skill ram, get teh OCZ gold, amazing ram, or the corsair XMS.

Well most of the core 2 boards that support crossfire are just on the intel chipset so an nvidia card would be fine.

Yeah, but he was getting on the fact that it was Crossfire, and he's purchasing an nVidia card. What's the point in getting a crossfire supported motherboard when you aren't going to be using it? Waste of money in my opinion...

Other than that, it looks like a good build. :)
