build or buy

ok here is my question. i have a dell xps 410 i got it in 2006 i think. so what will get me a better bang for my buck. buying a new processor like a I7 and new graphics card and new harddrive. plus upgrade the memory. or just buy a new computer. i was looking at one for like 900. so would it be cheaper to upgrade my old one or buy a new one. also will the one i build be as good as a new one. also is it hard to do. i think i know what im doing i have replaced the video card a few times in other computers so i think i know what im doing. let me know your thoughts
 
Your computer is not capable of having an i7 in it. You'll need a new motherboard, which also means new RAM, since you have DDR2 and i7 needs DDR3. So basically, try to sell that one and look into building a new one.
 
would it be cheaper to get a new mother board too then, basically just use my existing case power supply disk drives that kind of stuff and replace all the other stuff then
 
sounds like it would be easier to build from scratch. any guestiment on what it cost to build a medium to high end gaming computer?
 
I would say that 500-700 would be a good guess. If you give us a budget we can build you a rig that fits it.
