Build or buy

Im starting college this year ( an IT coure :) )
I may be wanting a laptop to bring with me for notes etc...
If so i would prefere to build my own, i have read an online guide , doesnt seem to hard.
However i dont know of any sites that sell the parts - do you know of any laptop component online shops?
Would the total costs be lower than say if i got a pre built from ebuyer or pc world?

I want to spend as little as possible - what do you guys think i should do?
 
OK. I was also thinking that if i was to buy - maybe buy an old spec computer and run somethinhg like damns mall linux or something like that so its not to slow but cheap as - and maybe a memory upgrade
 
Depends on how old is the laptop, personally i wouldn't buy an old laptop mostly due to no warranty and obsolete parts on it, used from a few months is still k
 
I'd probably buy when it comes to laptops, make it easy on yourself :) And like someone said before, the prices are about the same.
