Build or rebuild

Hi im new here and a noob. I want to build a computer for general use. Internet browsing movie watching, and some mild gaming.
I have a dell 8200 laying around and i was wondering if it would be worth just upgrading to my specs or just starting from scratch. i don't want to spend a whole lot so and money saved would be helped. I would like about 1tb hard drive i know that. but im not sure on what else i would need.
I want upgrade ablilty in the future also.
Any advice on what to i should buy would be helpfull

I'm guessing that you mean dell dimension 8200 as the inspiron is a laptop.

You would be best to either buy a new case and rehouse everything or even easier just get a new build from scratch because dell use fiddly arty farty crap to make their systems compact but as far as then upgrading goes...well you cant really.

What are you planning on useing the system for because browsing, movies, games and mild gaming doesn't require 1TB HDD. I live on my computer and have crap loads of music, a couple of movies and about 10 games and only have 155GB used. They aren't old small games either, WoW, Gears of War, All half lifes, CoD4...all are fairly hefty. 2x250GB would be more than enough and you can stick em in RAID0 for em to be faster. If you decide to do so we can cross that bridge when we get there.

If you were rebuilding or upgrading what would your budget be?
 
im not shure on my budget yet but mabey 1tb is too much. So basicly what could i save from this desktop if any thing? The dvd drives? power supply? Im shure the prossesor is out dated the hardrive is only like 37gb.
