I have never really built a computer from the ground up. I am going to start by saying that I am building to play games at acceptable (not max) settings. I would like to try the new COD and MOH. I do a lot of multitasking so I choose a Intel setup. Please point out anything that will not work out below.

(I will be buying one or two parts at a time due to money restrictions)

id like to keep it below 1200 USD.

Just as long as no single part is over 300, Ill be fine. As I said, I am working on a part at a time budget.
 
 
As stated above, I want to use Intel.

I like that GPU. Does it have its own RAM ir dies it canabilize the actual RAM like the notebook cards?? I'd like to keep it at 4 GB of ram if the video card does not consume any, so that I can run windows XP.
 
After reading that, I still want the intel chip.
The Phenom X6 is a good chip, but as was said on the other post, most games and programs are only running 4 threads at most. I am only running 3 to 5 programs at once, so the quad cores are fine for me.

And forgive my arrogance, But I had always read that intel was the best multi threading CPU's, and that AMD rulled the gaming sector.
 
Intel is better for gaming. Get this mobo, intel boards are crap generally, and this CPU, much better for gaming. HD6870 is just as quick as GTX470 for gaming but produces less noise and heat, and uses less power. I Wouldn't have chosen HIS as my first choice brand but they were the only ones left in stock at newegg along with the more expensive XFXs. Dedicated GPUs like the ones posted do not borrow any of your system RAM, they have their own. They are much better for gaming than integrated models. This HDD is just as quick as the one posted but costs $20 less. 850W PSU is overkill, get this PSU instead. This case has awesome functionality, looks nice, and doesn't cost the earth. Are you overclocking your CPU?
 
Ok, Intel is good at gaming. That is beside the point here. I only game maybe 3% of my time on the computer. What I do mostly is run multiple windows at once. (Word, Itunes, google chrome, excel, speech to text)

I have only overclocked once. That was on a laptop (HP G61. has the stock athlon X2 M300 ((2.0 GHZ)) ) I would have to say that I would not be overclocking the desktop, as 2.8 X4 would run twice as fast as what I needed in the past. NO need to run faster than double what is needed.

I am still out on a limb about the case. That will be the last part I buy anyway.

Case is personal preference really, once you've considered cooling ability. If your not overclocking, then no need for 3rd party cooler, stock one will more than suffice. For multitasking like that, RAM is the important thing. 4GB should be enough for loads of windows at once, though if in doubt, don't hesitate to upgrade or get more
 
I am trying not to go over 4 GB now that I have thought about it. I want to use Win. XP on it. Otherwise I will go for 64 bit Win. 7.
 
Why would you use XP? It's old, unsecure, and you can only use 3.2GB of RAM unless you get the crappy 64 bit version.

Why is the 64 Bit crappy?? I use it daily on my laptop and I have never had a problem with it.

Besides, I don't need security. Good virus protection is better than the Intel crap anyway.

Overclocking is not needed or used.

That i7 seems to be overkill. Wouldn't a i3 be a better option for my uses?? or even a higher end C2D.
 
Driver support on XP 64 is the worst of any recent windows release. Also, XP can only use DirectX 9, not 10 or 11, so some games might not look as good or run as well. Some won't even run at all.

You gave a $1200 budget...I just tried to build the best system I could for that. Intel is dropping their current sockets, so there won't be anything to upgrade to upgrade to besides the hexacore models...the i7 will stay "powerful" for longer. It's like buying

Do you need the price cut down?


edit: Keep in mind that these specific parts won't always be the best thing to use...this is just the best deals that I can find right now. A month from now, the best GPU, PSU, dvd burner, case, and possibly motherboard and HDD for the price will very likely be something different.

No, the price is fine. I just dont see the point of overkill. I dont game but maybe a day a month, so there is no need to use a top of the line processor.
