Building a computer for my brother :) what parts do I need please?

Yeah, no problem!

That GTX 760 should be able to play most games at a high quality with good FPS. It was original card I chose when budgeting for my build (too expensive for me haha)..

Awesome thanks! :) lol same here really! the plan was just to use the intel graphics for a few months while my brother saves up for a graphics card lol. But I'm hoping that I can help him by selling some things so he can afford a graphics card :) but it's going to be difficult lol!

We still have to save up for a good monitor (he is probably going to be using the tv for a while) and then also windows 8.1 :)

but the good news is that so far we have the Case, hard drive, motherboard, dvd drive, a gaming mouse, gaming keyboard and mouse pad, we bought a desk and an a office chair, and I think he has a microphone and some speakers somewhere :)

So we are doing well now lol, it has been a long time saving up though - and thanks to Christmas he can now hopefully order the power supply, the ram and CPU :)

Oh yes, will max out most if not every game.


The 4690K is most definitely worth the extra 6

Also, the tech preview isn't necessarily better, its a new Windows, you end up using it anyway.
Kind of a PITA to install though

Brilliant thanks :) Yeah we will go for the 4690k as it's worth the £6 extra and also its newer :) Oh do you prefer it though to windows 8.1? I quite like 8.1 now if I'm honest :) but if my brother can use that for free then that is brilliant! so it's a demo from Microsoft that you can use for a few months or something?

You can use it forever, but Microsoft won't help you if anything goes wrong after the full version comes out.

You have to sign up for their program, get the ISO, make a bootable flash drive and install after that

PowerISO is a great program for this (I think it's the primary program people use).

It also helps you make Linux USB's if you wanna mess around hehe

A 4690K under full load can put 180W, not overclocked! Plus the 970 under load is around 150/160. If he ever deciders to run SLI he will be screwed, around 320W, just for the cards. I just don't see the point saving a few buck on a power supply that your going to have to upgrade later if you upgrade. Each to his own.

The 4690k will only draw that much power under something like Prime95 which is not in anyway likely to be representative of a real use-case, and certainly not in gaming. However, lets assume you're right.

Also, the GTX970 has a max power consumption at 145W and I cannot find any references that change that, but again, lets assume your absolute worst case scenario is right, which is very unlikely.

The GPU and CPU will draw 28A. So again, I ask, the CX500M can provide a continuous 38A, on the OP's system, where is the other 10A needed? Plenty for that system.

So all I am saying is yes, if he plans on getting another 970, then sure, a higher rated 12V rail is recommended, but as it currently sits, your claim that by adding a 970 will remove overhead is not correct.

To be honest, I'm not dragging this out to a 20 post back and fourth over 20 bucks on a power supply. If he wants to take your advice and get a 500W, great. If he takes mine and gets 750W, great. I would spend 20 bucks now and be done with it and not have to worry about it. Done.
