Mum wants a new computer... aus $2000 budget, use for some multimedia, digital camera photo editing, no games, ms office applications.
Let me know what u think

i can almost guarantee thats a bad PSU in there. Have a look at the PSU 101 to see what to look for in a PSU :)

not a bad board but you'll get a bit more performance from an nForce3 based board

there are better drives (litterally and from price/performance perspective). see CD/DVD 101.

you should probably get more ram, mabe 2 512 chips if she is planning to do camara editing. When I played my dv camara clip on pinnacle studio with 768 ram even the xtra 256 helped. besieds that not bad
 
could someome please tell me how much that would cost in US Dollars.

And i would agree with fishsticks, get 2x512MB, and if you only want 512mb, get a 512mb stick, not 2x 256
 
aussie dollar is about 0.7 US dollars.... so AUS$2000 = US$2857. altho, no doubt it would be much cheaper for u guys is US anyway... cos pretty much everything is cheaper for you. :mad: lucky ducks! :rolleyes:
 
thanks, i'll go for the 2 x 512 RAM. does all this PSU stuff really make much difference? i wasn't aware that it did. what is your opinion on those OPTI-UPS power protection things? - like the 575C series? http://www.i-tech.com.au/products/215_OPTI_UPS_Power_Protection.asp

Yes , the psu makes a whole lotta diference, if you get one that doesnt have enough power for your system it will just restart when its under stress, also the watts dont really mean alot, its just how much power is on certain rails, for the 12v rail you would probaly be fine with 22amps , but a good psu has 30-34amps on the 12v rail , and the good ones have dual rails with like 16amps on each one equaling to 32amps;)
 
pentium 4 are known to perform better with video editing, multimedia stuff. any multithreaded application since HT has 2 virtual processors :)
 
Yup, as a general rule AMD's are better for gaming. P4's are usually better for working with, like having 4 different Office apps open and editing your holiday [pics in photoshop.
