You shouldn't have any trouble putting a build together then, since you have experience.

OS or Monitor included or not?

he said between $400-$500, not almost $700, can you not read?
anyway here is a more practical build

Hello aquakeepr, I have read that you are looking to build a low cost machine for surfing, gaming and some multimedia tasks. The other Posters seem to have recommended some hardware options that look like they meet your needs pretty well. I would like to recommend to you that you take a look at and compare the Different Vista additions over at the Windows Vista page: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/compare-editions/default.aspx and see which version of Vista meets your needs. In your particular situation you Home Premium will work just fine for you but I would do the 32 bit install which will help you utilize some of your resources better. (you can always upgrade later as Vista includes both disks in the box).
Good luck

Why not just buy a prebuilt IMO?

In Canada (overpriced country) from Best Buy, you are getting @ $550 a Q6600 Quad Core, 3GB or 4GB, 8500/8600GT computer.
