building a computer

this is my first time building a computer and I want to create a computer with these stats with 500-800 dollars if possible:

quad core proccessor

2G memory ram

500-750G HD

decent graphic card that can handle most games

so i need suggestions on which parts to buy, like motherboard, proccessor, HD, optical driver, kind of power suppy i should get and everything else you need to buy a computer since this would be my first attempt at creating a computer and don't know much about parts, if you guys could give me links of parts you suggest, i'd appreciate it. thanks :)

I would get a Geforce 8800GT if you can swing it. They run around $160-170 before rebates. One of those along with a case would still put you within an $800 budget. If you had to go with an 8600GT, I wouldn't pick that one. Evga has one that is $80 before rebates. For around $120, the Geforce 8800GS would be considerably better than the 8600GT if you couldn't swing the 8800GT.

Overall though, the build list looks decent. If you aren't a rebate kind of guy, I would definately change a few of the components though.

In short: If you want any sort of gaming computer, don't even think about putting a Geforce 8600GT in it if at all possible.

thanks for the help, I didn't expect so many people to reply since I'm new

I've noticed you've made an error posting the desktop tower daisy with the motherboard link but I got a few questions after searching it up

I'm confused with the power supply, if it says yes is thre an inbuilt power supply? and I wouldn't need to buy a power supply?

also, would I need a fan for my computer to cool it down? I think I'll be using it a lot. are most fans alike? or are there different fans that perform more efficient then another, if so recommendations are appreciated.

another thing, should I upgrade to 4gb? is it worth it? is 2x 2G stick better or 4x 1G stick better? thanks!

Buy the case w/out the power supply on that page, it is cheaper. The vast majority of power supplies that come with cases are crap, and unreliable. That 350W w/ the other version of that case is probably too weak for what you want.

The specs say that case comes with a 120mm fan already, you might want to buy any standard 80mm fan to put elsewhere in the case though. They run maybe $4-5 tops. Thermaltake and Antec make some nice quality standard fans for cheap. I would also recommend looking into an aftermarket fan&heatsink for your processor. It comes with one, but they aren't as good and can be a royal pain to install. That part is up to you though, either way would work.

As far as memory...4GB is better than 2GB obviously, but if you're borderline on your budget 2GB would do just fine until you had the money.

2X2 sticks give you 2 memory slots left to play with, and the max capacity for that mobo is 8GB. Obviously with 4X1 sticks, you would have no more slots left and would be done at 4GB unless you replaced some or all of the sticks.

thanks for the really detailed reply! can you suggest any heatsink that would be compatible with Gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3L? since it's an intel motherboard should I look at any heatsink compatible with intel? I'm still a bit confused on how to check compatibility

You're looking to be compatible with the processor, rather than the mobo. Although, with the above mobo, obviously that limits what processors are compatible with it anyway. Here's a newegg search to start at:

I'm no expert with all of the intricacies of cpu cooler compatibilities, so pretty much I would check to see if it mentions it is fine with Core 2 Quads, if it doesn't it probably will fit anyway...regardless I would run your choice(s) by this forum. Others will know much better than me.

yeah my bad, that's what i meant processor.

i forgot about one more part, the sound card. should i buy a sound card? or will there be an integrated one that comes with motherboards? i don't really care much for top quality sounds. but i don't want a computer that has no sounds either. sorry if this is a stupid question and probably is.

edit//
nevermind i just found it and it comes w/ the motherboard.
