Building a computer

Hi:

I have never built a computer before. I was going to have a friend of mine order all the parts from his retailer. He is a IT manager for a hospital so he can get me a pretty good discount and he also owns his own company as well. Now my budget would be anywhere from 450-500 so it's not the greatest budget since I am trying to sell my laptop for a desktop. Now when I go on to newegg do certain parts go with each other? like can I not use a certain motherboard with a certain hard drive? Like I said my budget is going to be a decent graphics card that's all i really want. thanks for the help.

Hi there jon.

There are some compatability issues that you do need to consider.

The type of motherboard. At the moment the main 4 are
Intel:

LGA 775
LGA 1366

AMD:

AM2+
AM3

Whether you go for AMD or Intel youl need a processor thats compatible. For your budget id say your gonna be looking at AM2+ or LGA 775, but you might find a good deal with your IT friend.

Also with the ram. Main two are DDR2 and DDR3. Depending on your motherboard your gonna need DDR2 for AM2+ and LGA 775. DDR3 is for AM3 and LGA 1366. AM3 is also backwards compatible to DDR2.

Those are the basic compatible problems for now, how this was helpful.
