I am building a desktop to play WoW and this is what I came up with:

DVD Burner - ASUS DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS Black SATA 24X
Computer Case - COOLER MASTER RC-692-KKN2 CM690 II Advanced Black Steel ATX Mid Tower
Hard Drive - Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5"

I was wondering if there was something on here that is overkill for WoW that I could downgrade to help shave down the cost a bit. Thank you.
 
.....Most of it. Even though sites and whatnot give you crazy recommended specs to run WoW at a good frame rate, it's definately not necessary. This is my rig right now:

cpu: wolfdale e5300 dual core @ 2.60Ghz $90
mobo: ASUS p5q deluxe $100 (used)
RAM: 4x1gig ddr2 6400 $100
PSU: 500watt earthwatt $100
DVD: HP lightscribe dvd burner $50
HDD: 500gig barracuda @ 7200rpm $50 (used)
GPU: Radeon EAH 5750 $150
Total $550
No take into consideration most of these parts are at least a year old. the newest is the video card which I got a christmas, so this computer wouldn't even cost 550.
I get anywhere between 80 to 150 fps on WoW max setting. lowest I ever see it go is about 40-50 and thats only in cities

edit: this doesn't include the case, cause i have a server case that's built like a tank and have no idea how much it would cost.
 
exactly what settings are you playing on? lowest?

because i dont believe you can get 80-150 frames per second in wow with that.

also, the max frames for wow is 60 frames, so you wont see a difference any higher nor will the frames in wows interface show past 60.

also a lot of those specs you have cost more then the upgraded ones i posted or near it.

you also didnt add in the operation system and case to your cost

the only big difference in my spec cost and yours is the CPU

you didn't read carefully. I do play on max settings with these components. WoW can run at higher than 60 fps, but your right it doesn't really do it anymore justice. it does show it, unless you have vsync on, which i think that is a default setting.

also the prices i posted are what I payed for them the PSU is over 3 years old as well as the ram. the motherboard isn't anywhere near new either. the only decent piece i have is the GPU

and I put in an edit, i don't know how much my case would have cost, but then again, the case wont effect WoW. and operating system....you know....sometimes it costs 200...sometimes it doesn't cost anything....
