Building a computer

Hello everyone, this is my first time going into computer stuff like this and I've been hearing from a lot from friends that it is much better and cheaper to build your own computer. So here I am asking for help because I have absolutely no idea what I am doing nor do I have any idea on what to get. Being a big gamer that's what I want to build my computer for. So any suggestions or advice on what to get and what to do are greatly appreciated.

What's your budget and where are you located and what's your currency?

Do you need a monitor, mouse, keyboard, or any other peripherals. Also do you need an OS?

I have a budget of about 1,500 USD, willing to go over a bit, I have a keyboard, will need a new monitor because the one I do have is from the 90's (but could still possibly work), peripherals? and i'll probably use either Windows 7 or 8

Can any of your friends help you put it together? It is not real difficult but it helps a lot if someone you know has knowledge and experience with putting a desktop computer together.

You should be able to do it on your own with no problems. I did just fine. My dad was helping me but I know more what was going on than him.

As for parts you're probably looking at a 3570K and a GTX 7950 or so. Maybe higher. Somebody else here can get you a parts list but I don't have time to right now.

You probobly don't need help if you have Internet. Shop at newegg, best place to buy parts. Here is a good build:
I5 3570K
Gigabyte UD3H Z77
Evga GTX 670
WD Black 2 Tb
Crucial M4 128 GB SSD
2 x 8 GB G.Skill
corsair TX 650M
Windows 8 64 Bit
Acer 23 inch 1080P
Logitech G9x
Microsoft Sidewinder X4 or Steelseries 6G

Will be around $1500 for a very good gaming build.

I have heard a bit about OS's and video cards and CPU's, so my question comes to which one should I choose or is all really about preference? Would I need quad core or dual core?

Quad core is reccomended on a budget over $900. For a OS, you want windows, linux mint, ubuntu, etc. don't have many games. Macintosh doesnt work without certain motherboards, gpus, etc. and isn't actually made for anything but macs. I would go Intel for all CPUs, unless on a $700 budget I like the FX 6300, which is in the middle of a i3 and i5. nVidia is good for higher end, like the 670 and 680, AMD is better on the lower higher end with the 7950 and 7870, and nvidia is better in the middle end with the 660 and 650 Ti Boost, which is around the 7790. Though AMD's cards and nVidia's are all really similar in the same price range.
