Building a Desktop

Hi everyone.

I'm trying to build a desktop right now and so far all's I have is the CPU, which is an AMD Opteron 165 Processor (1.8ghz).

I'd like help finding a motherboard, hard drive, and case. I have found the RAM, which is DDR2-800mhz, so the motherboard should be able to support it, and maybe up to 4 slots.

This is the first desktop I'm going to build, so any help and advice would be really appreciated. :) I am going to run Linux on it as well.

As for a graphics card, I'd like an integrated graphics card...or a really cheap one (I am not going to use this unit for gaming etc), so if it comes with the motherboard that'd be great.

And I'm not sure what power supply to be looking at either...hmmm...well any help would be appreciated, and of course any advice you have for me as well.

I've asked for help before regarding a desktop PC and members replied to my thread stating I am rude. I hope you don't find me rude by asking for help...I am not trying to be. I am just completely new at this and would really like to start building my own PCs. I mean no offense by asking for help...I am just trying to learn.

What socket is the CPU? The reason I ask is because I don't think Opterons support DDR2 ram. :(

If you're only going to run linux, I would say just get the cheapest parts you can find. Linux doesn't really require a whole lot to run so you should be fine. What are going to be doing with linux anyways?

It's a dual-core. How do I find out what socket it is?

I would be surprised if this dual-core processor does not support DDR2 RAM...

Here is some info about the processor:
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/opteron-165.html

It says "Another really important reason why we got so much interested in taking a closer look at Opteron 165 is the fact that it is very much different from the majority of Opteron CPUs from other families: Opteron 165 can work just fine in a regular desktop platform. Firstly, this processor is compatible with Socket 939 infrastructure, and secondly, it supports regular non-Registered DDR SDRAM. In other words, AMD Opteron 165 can be installed into regular Socket 939 mainboards without any incompatibility threats. From this standpoint AMD Opteron 165 doesn’t differ much from Athlon 64 X2. Moreover, if AMD didn’t want to push this processor into the Value server segment, it could have easily been known as Athlon 64 X2 3500+."

Added: And on this page it's showing that they used DDR2-667mhz RAM. I hope this processor can support DDR2-800mhz RAM. :o

Anyone know if my CPU can support DDR2 RAM? I'd find it extremely hard to believe that a processor released in what 2006 can't support DDR2!?

Yea sorry man, your CPU is a socket 939, which only supports DDR400 and below ram. It does not support DDR2 so you're going to need a new mobo and ram if you want to use that CPU. FYI, socket 939's have been discontinued so finding a cheap mobo is nearly impossible. I know because I was looking to upgrade my parent's mobo about a month ago. Sorry! :(

Damn, really? It can't go on an AM2+ motherboard which supports DDR2 RAM? In the article it said it was equal to an AM2+ (Athlon 64 x2 3500).. :o

in performance maybe, but its one pin short of being an am2+, and even if it would fit, it doesn't have the ddr2 controller
