Building a Desktop

I really have no idea on what parts are good, what I should get, what goes well together ect. I am mostly just looking to see options. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Budget: $1000-$1500
Use: Schoolwork(Web+Word), pretty heavy gaming (starcraft 2 + some graphic intensive MMOs), I also do a bit of graphic design mostly with photoshop, so I am looking for a decent amount of RAM
Processor: Intel
RAM: 6gigs-8gigs (I don't know if that budget can handle that much)
Graphics Card: Best I can get for this budget, probably the largest priority.

I just want to make sure this can max out most current games graphics settings. I am hoping to upgrade components in 2-3 years, so it doesn't really need to last long term.

Keyboard and mouse I am getting separately and is not part of the budget. Windows 7 I'll also buy separately and won't be part of the budget.

The case/box all the components in should be included in the budget as well as the monitor.

I will probably be getting it within the next 3 months or so.
 
3 months is a long time right now. With in two months, Intel will release a completely new platform, and both AMD and Nvidia will have a new line of graphics cards out. (they already have some of them out...)

Your best bet will be to come back within about a week of when you intend to order, and check again within a few hours of ordering. (Feel free to hang around till then though! We don't bite!)

I can tell you that on your budget, you're probably going to want some flavor of Intel Core i7 and either a Geforce GTX 580 or a Radeon HD6970. If you buy it after Sandy Bridge comes out, you'll be wanting an I7 2600K. If before, an i7 950. As for the rest of the components...who knows? Prices will change quite a bit between now and then.
 
You could get an i5 and then get a better graphics card and more ram. Also, this way you can then upgrade to i9 when it comes out.
 
^ Ignore that, it's spam. There is no i9.

edit: The i9 became the i7 980X when it launched...which means there's no possible way to upgrade to it from an i5 on the same motherboard. Failspam.

Heavy gaming and graphic design, and needs to last 2-3 years? That'll take more than an i5...

Again, though, Sandy Bridge should be out by the time this thing gets ordered.
 
Do what now?

An i7 beats an i5 in just about everything. But more importantly(for gaming), it has the X58 xhipset, which is far superior to p55.
