Building a gaming computer

Hey there im looking to build a completely new Gaming comp. I currently have a piece of crud laptop which is slow as. So i was wondering if you could give me a list of some good Graphics cards, Motherboards, CPU, amount of ram etc as im not well versified when it comes to computers. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
My budget is around about $2500 to $3000 USD

yeah i would go with a core i7 like daisymtc said or get one of the newer 6 cores by amd:

great price, dual 16x pci-e slots, plenty of ram overclocking room, and support for the x6 cpus.
for gpu, i would get this:

you could wait for the new 5970 4gb ram edition which should be a MONSTER in terms of performance, or you could go with this one and tri-fire later...

price so far: 1130. still plenty of room for psu, heatsink, ram, and ssd.
