Building a gaming computer...

I am not very knowledgeable about building computers. But I want to get a new gaming computer. Other than my dell... ugh! I have 1,200 dollars to spend on it. I have been looking at Pricewatch and Newegg for components... The problem I am having is I do not know if the parts I am looking at are compatible. I would like a fast cpu like 3ghz as much ram as I can get and a good video card. I don’t need a hard drive or monitor or operating system, since I already have them. Also the hard drive I have is a SATA. So basically I am looking for advice on a motherboard cpu, ram, psu, fans heat sinks. And all that other good stuff. Thanks in advance for all the help if any is given hehe.

Hey man! Glad to see you have crossed over to the better place ^^ My suggestion get a parts list. go to newegg.com (best place) and select all the parts that fit th budget... post here and we will help you determine which will work.

You Need : (Excuse me if I forgot something)
Monitor
MotherBoard
Memory (RAM)
CPU
Video Card
Case
Power Supply
(Maybe sound card if not built onto mobo or you dont want to use it)
HardDrive
Keyboard
Mouse

I think thats it. And for the motherboard may I suggest Asus!

I need the following:
Mother board
CPU
Memory (RAM)
Video card
Power supply
Case

Total:1128. I would have liked to get a faster CPU but I could not find any AMD’s over 2.4ghz that were reasonably priced. But I think the thing would explode as soon as I connected all the wires. Any suggestions or recommendations concerning this computer would be greatly appreciated.

Don't worry about the Athlon's 2.4ghz speed. The one your getting is a ATHLON 64 4000+, the 4000+ means it equals to over 4000mhz, or 4ghz. AMD makes CPU's that run more efficiently then Pentiums. The only thing I could think of is downgrading the CPU and upgrading the video card.

First of all, all of your CPU and GPU prices are too high. Where are you buying from? You can do better for $1200.

For a motherboard I was looking at:
Mfr Part Number: A8V-E SE
Definetly could do improving on, but good enough.

For ram four sticks of .... 41 dollars a stick
pqi POWER Series 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) System Memory
OK... but If your planning to overclock you may want to go with 1 gig of fancier RAM.

CPU: ATHLON 64 4000+ PGA939 2.4GHZ 1MB CACHE VAR 89W 2.0GHZ PIB
Good processor. Just make sure its a San Diego not Clawhammer.

NVidia GeForce 6600GT 256MB DDR3 8x AGP Video Card w/TV-Out, DVI
You can do better for the price. Also thats AGP and your motherboard is PCI-E.

Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! Value 32bit Internal PCI OEM CT4780
Umm not sure where your getting 32 bit sound, but if thats the price then go for it.

Kingston Ethernet 10/100Mbps RJ-45 PCI Bulk KNE110TX
No need, your motherboard has an integrated ethernet.

Case whatever suits you...

THERMALTAKE TMT-W0013 480W ATX P4 Silent Purepower Power Supply Xaser Edition
Thermaltake tends to make crappy PSU's. Look at PSU 101 for help choosing one.

CD-RW and DVD-RW nothing wrong there.

34erd what would you recommend for a motherboard. I just looked at a bunch of stuff off pricewatch. I really don't have a clue as to what would be compatible with what or what is better for the buck. maybe you could enlighten me a bit. That being said, Thanks for the replys guys. Keep up the good work.

The main drawback of that of that motherboard is the chipset. Try to stick with the nforce 4 chipset for gaming.

As for which one I would recomend:

There are alot of other good boards but those are the ones which I recomend.

That does look like a great graphics card, apj101. But my monitor has a different plug. are those adaptors that come with it? Anyways thanks every one for helping out with this. I would have to say this is a very helpful forum to say the least.

70 dollars is no way enough to get a good case, a gaming mouse and keyboard. You'll need like 200 dollars if you want a quality case and gaming hardware. But that IS a good rig, apart from that.

ok ill check it out thanks for the info

well 34erd said to stay away from the clawhammer... What is wrong with that type of cpu? So I will probably take that advice and shy away from buying that machine Matrix has. Not saying it's bad or anything but I would like to build my own.

The clawhammer isn't bad, but if you have an option go for the venice or san diego over it. Those 2 cores are usualy cheaper also.
