Building a gaming desktop. 2 questions!

I'm currently scraping up the money to build a high-end gaming desktop. I have 2 questions:

1) Is this a good build?
CPU-------------Intel Core i7-950 3.06Ghz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler------Cooler Master RR-B10-212P-G1 76.8 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler
Motherboard-----Asus P6X58-E PRO ATX LGA1366 Motherboard
Memory----------Wintec One 12GB (3 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Hard Drive 1----Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Hard Drive 2----Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card------XFX Radeon HD 6950 2GB Video Card
Case------------NZXT Phantom (White) ATX Full Tower Case

2) How much wattage will the power supply need?
-How low do you think I can go safely?
-What do you recommend?

get an i7 2600k cpu and a mobo with a z68 chipset
go for 16(4x4gb) gb of ram
why the two harddrives? if anything get 1 and get 1 ssd
get an nvidia graphics card, best bet is a gtx 580
love the case, but there have been complaints about the size of it
and i would say get a good 1000W one so your safe with upgrading/rebuilding for a long time. and get something like a corsair or antec brand, theres a lot of good brands i just cant remember them all
 
12 gigs is a ridiculous amount of RAM unless you're doing some serious editing or what not. For gaming 8GB is all you'll need for now, 4 would be fine really. If you have that high of a budget, get an SSD. As far as gaming is concerned an i7 is unnecessary. Go for an i5 2500K. That's considered the best processor for gaming out at the moment. There is no real gain you gain if you go any higher than that with an i7.

I'm using 1 hard drive for games and 1 for music, videos, pictures, etc.
And I'll look in to the parts you suggested, thanks!
 
In response to bonehead's comment. Nvidia vs Radeon is personal preference. Just go with the card that is best for your budget. It really kinda wavers back in forth which is a better choice at a certain budget.

Like I said 12 gigs is ridiculous. And 16 is even crazier.

If you want to get an i7, get the 2600k, but strictly for gaming, save you cash and get a 2500k.

hey he said high end lol, and well i suggested the 16 cause its cheap, and games like bf 3 are already needing more then 4, so might as well get it done with now rather then upgrade later

Exactly what I'm thinking. Why spend money now, and then have to spend more later? But anyway, would a GeForce GTX 560 do? because that's more in my current price range. Not that I can't spend a bit more than expected...

Ehh I guess. I say get 8 GB now. When you feel the need to upgrade later down the road go ahead. I twill always be cheaper in the future, untill it's way obsolete. But save money now and put that cash towards an SSD or better video card.
 
i mean the 560 will for sure play bf3, but the 580 will max out everything with dx11 and aa and all that, i mean you could prob get decent settings on the 560 though

It will be fine with even 40 frames per second. Dual 580s are a ton of money, use a lot of power and the benefit is not that much. I would say that a 6950 2gb would be fine.
That is, of course, if your budget doesn't allow for dual 580s.
 
As you can see from my previous post, a GTX 580 is the only card pushing 40+ FPS at max settings. If you actually looked at the rest of the cards scores it appears that the GTX 560 TI is your best FPS to dollar ratio at $6.91 per frame. I must say being an AMD/ATI preferred customer I'm not happy to admit that BF3 spanks AMD and Nvidia really shines :(. I would not recommend getting an AMD/ATI card if your wanting to play BF3 maxed out.
 
30FPS and up are fluid motion. And 2 580s are an expensive waste of time. Also, bonehead (name fits you), the link you posted in the other thread was pure speculation based upon no concrete evidence. And you keep spreading it as fact.
A single 560 will be fine. The game itself recommends a 460 1Gb. a 570 could probably max BF3 at playable FPS.

on all high settings, you need atleast MINIMUM 2x gtx 580's and again MINIMUM 6gb ddr3 RAM to get 60fps

oh yeah, and nobody every corrected bonehead's 1000w psu recomendation, even 2 580's overclocked everything only use like 718 peak from the wall socket, so a quality 750 min and i'd recomend going for a 800w powersupply by antec/corsair/xfx/silverstone/seasonic/pc power & cooling

Also i'd say go for a 570 if you can, 580 if you can do that so it will last longer. also for the case i think i've heard of their space issues too, look at corsair, lian li, and coolermaster cases, they are all sick.

I have been seeing the same stuff everywhere for it, my one friend has one 589 and he's getting 38 fps maxed out, and I asked him this morning and when he was playing the beta it was eating up almost 6gb ram
