Building a gaming system

Hello, First post :good:

Little background:
My last three computers were apples, I kind of lost touch with whats good and what's not good for pc's. Im fairly familiar with basics for computers, how to put them together and what not but I have never actually built a computer from scratch to meet my needs.

My Goal:
As of right now.. To play high end games on high to max settings (Battlefield 3, starcraft II, etc)

Budget:
$1000 ish. I'm in Canada, buying parts locally will kill me but ordering online should be ok but i'll burn a little on shipping. Was looking at the alienware pc's but for the cost I could only get the low end of there systems and I think for the cost I could build a better system for cheaper.

If you guys could help me with some suggestions on parts, I would appreciate it. I have a couple questions after looking around at part sites (newegg, tiger direct)

1. Cases.. Other than looks what's the difference between some of the $50 gaming cases to the $200 cases?

2. What should I look for in a monitor?

3. Best parts I should get within my $1000 ish budget (not including monitor, mouse, key)

Thanks in advance.

If your from Canada, i would check out Memory Express man. I am from Edmonton Alberta and they not only compete with Newegg.ca but when you go in to order everything they cut you a deal.

1. Some of the more expensive cases has better airflow within the case to give you lower temps. Plus better cable management, better organization of components and more opertunities to upgrade (such as water cooling). More expensive case are also build heavier duty (not as flimsy) and are easier to work on/with.

2.Monitor I mostly concentrate in size. Then it would be resolution. Then refresh rate, shading ratio, as well as connections. Size is always personal preferance, resolution you want the best (highest), refresh rate fast, shading ratio high, and connections i like all sorts of connection options.
**Brands do play a roll in how well the monitor is built and how long will last**

3. Best parts you should get are based on what you would like to do with the computer. What parts of whatever you are using the computer for are you into (such as gaming, are you a picture fanatic, love playing in the highest graphics possible). Not only that, i would set your budget so you have room to go over. Guaranteed that you will go over the $1000 if you set it at that point.

EDIT: Never did ask, are you in preference of AMD over Intel? or do you care?
