Building a new computer

Hello everyone o/

So, this week I'm moving out of my old place and to celebrate am getting a new GAMING computer off of newegg. The reason I'm posting is because since I last built one, I'm hearing tons of things about new hardware I've never heard of..

So.. Wanted to ask:
Do AMD or Intel have the better 'bang for your buck' processors? I've heard AMD but would like to verify.

Any particularly great 'bang for your buck' graphics cards or motherboards or PSUs any of you would recommend at the moment? I've already checked out the latest ones in the hot deals threads, mind you. ;)

My budget being about 1000$, is there any particular advice you'd give to my hardware choices or happen to have a recommended computer setup?

Do you have a monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers, etc?

I would say roll AMD because their parts are cheaper, but thats just me.
 
Nope, I'm getting everything, headset, mouse, you name it.

Oh, and that's a 1000$ budget after rebates and all that stuff.
 
So, using advice I received from some friends, I put this together... Any advice regarding alternative pieces for less [motherboard?] or significantly better equipment for a little more would be appreciated [video/motherboard?].

I also don't know much about PSUs, so if anyone wants to verify that that is all compatible or maybe direct me to a place that is easy-to-learn about them, I would really appreciate it.

The monitor will be able to display in HD well, correct?

Your cpu will be 65$ cheaper after taxes if you can get it from a Microcenter. Actually, that's the price for a 930(even better). Link

Also, if possible, I beleive the processors are tri-channel, which means you'll be better off with ram that is in multiples of 3's (6 gigs as opposed to 4).

Also... 875 watts seems like a pretty massive PSU for those components.

I don't think that that MoBo will work with that CPU. I beleive the 920/930 CPU's need the 1366 socket Mobo.

If you'll need a OS, this OS/MoBo combo might be a good deal.

I'm not an expert by any stretch, but these are some things to check on before making purchases.

Ok, about the PSU:

Someone recommended it in one of the reviews. Again, I don't know anything about the PSU so I went with it. It also comes in a combo with the i7 for -30$. Would this be better?:

I unfortunately have to buy from only newegg as I am using the no-payment for a year thing [poor college kid].

Thanks for the advice on the RAM, that seems to make logical sense, it was a combo item so I grabbed it.

I've been editing my post, and the MoBo linked seems to be pretty popular. It's the one I'm expecting to get and I like the combo with the OS. If it's not to your liking I'm sure someone more knowledgable can make a recomendation. I would guess you could use an even smaller PSU still depending on how much upgradability you want to build in, but for $70(/rebates) I would think that that is a really good deal. The combos that PSU are included in are even better.
Link. G. Skill has gotten good comments on this board for their Ram.

You want to make sure that your processor and your motherboard are of the same socket type. You can find this in the specifications at the NewEgg product page.

An i5-750 is an 1156 socket type which is not compatible with the 1366 socket type of the motherboard in the link.

This is a well rated, less expensive 1156 board combo'd with an OS Again, I'm not a 'computer guy' and am mostly going by other people's reviews. You'll want to do your own checking before buying anything.

Or, An i5-750 with decently rated board

It seems like the move to the i5 will make it a lot easier to put a quality build together, keeping your budget in mind.

your mixing your sockets for cpu and motherboard, if your going to get that 750, you will need a 1156 socket type, but if your getting a i7 930 you can do a 1366, also get a ati radeon, their cheap and relatively powerful

You might want to check your link to the MoBo/Os. Your PSU is very mainstream. I've never built so take it for what it's worth but unless someone more knowledgable sais otherwise it seems like a good list. I know the Ati Radeon 5770 GPU is the same price as what you've listed, and they are very popular but I don't know what research you've done. Make sure, as you know by now, that your socket type between the CPU and MoBo is compatible and I'm guessing you're in good shape. Good luck with your build!

Alright, I see your point with the GPU and have switched. I honestly googled suggestions and came up with the GTX, I'm happy someone recommended the change with a series #. I had looked for Radeon before but never saw that series.

Mobo/OS is combo dealed, so I don't think that's a big deal.

Can anyone confirm that the PSU contains everything I need? I'm eager to purchase but won't do without someone to make sure I'm not screwing myself :)

i would recommend getting a better gpu if you can spring the money, but that is up to you.

i can't get the mobo/os link to work. could you post the individual links?

edit: just saw your post. that psu should be fine for a 5770 (and crossfire 5770s down the road). what motherboard are you getting?

Is there a particular reason why that RAM is better, if you don't mind explaining? I don't think it's supported by my MoBo, although it'd still be easy to switch out MoBos if it's worth it.

I'm guessing that Joh is noticing the lower Cas Latency on the ram he is suggesting. (7 vs. 9) I don't know why it wouldn't work with the MoBo you linked, although again I'm not an expert. Actually, if there is somehow a compatability issue there I hope someone will mention it. I haven't bought Ram or the MoBo yet and if the supported memory speed can be an issue I'd be interested to know.
