Building a new computer

I will be building a new computer I have no idea when I will but I hope to build one by the end of the year. My last computer I built was in 2008 and I really have not kept up with much of anything since then so I am a little out of the loop on computers.

I have two builds here a amd build and a intel build. On the amd build I have two processors but dont know which cpu to get. This pc will primarily be used for gaming but I do want to get into other things as well which require a good cpu and lots of memory.

I really do not have a set price but cheaper the better but I do want quality parts and a build that will last at least three years or longer. I guess the most I want to spend is $3000 but I really do not want to go that high.

Also I built these on newegg but I dont have to buy from there either newegg or amazon will do.

Can't see your shopping lists - can you just post links to the separate components? Thanks.

So hang on this is two builds you are doing or just one build?

The i7 4790K system is really good and almost difficult to fault - naturally it blows the AMD setup out of the water. If you wanted an AMD system I'd go FX-8320 or FX-95xx (whatever it is) but still the i7 would thrash them.

Just a few heads up:

- Get one Samsung 840 EVO 250GB or 500GB instead of multiple SSDs, presumably in RAID-0 (where you'd only get 250GB total space anyway with a 250GB and a 120GB drive). The 840 EVO is about the same speed, if not quicker than the 840 Pro - and cheaper.

- Windows 7 Home won't detect all 32GB of RAM. You need Pro or Ultimate since Home only detects up to 16GB of RAM including graphics RAM, so it will only be detecting 13GB since you have a 3GB graphics card.

- But I'd get 8.1 Pro over 7 Pro or Ultimate now anyway.

- The case is kind of outdated. If you want a full tower look at the BitFenix Colossus or the NZXT Phantom or the HAF X instead.

- 1000W PSU is overkill. A good 600W will be fine for one 780 Ti.

Just one build dont know yet if I want to go AMD or Intel probably will be going with Intel though.

Yeah I wasnt sure about the SSD I do want more than one but I wont be putting them in raid. I want one for the OS and one for everything else and I have another drive for anything else that wont fit on that SSD.

I was going to get 8.1 pro anyway just wasnt sure yet if I wanted Windows 7 doesnt make a big difference in the ram anyway not like I will be using all 32 GBs yet.

Thanks Ill look into those cases I do want one that will be easy to add liquid cooling in the future.

Im probably going to stick with that powersupply cause I will end up with two of those graphics cards eventually.

Seasonic 860W Platinum

This is only $20 more than your 1000W (including the $20 rebate on the EVGA). It's still plenty for dual GTX 780 Ti. I can run two of them with my overclocked i7 on a 750W silver without problems.
I can't remember who makes EVGA power supplies, but it's a good OEM if I recall. The thing is though, you want Seasonic to make your PSU. They are by far #1.
Other than that, Spirit is spot on.

Well it's pointless buying 7 Home now because you will end up having to buy Pro or Ultimate when you want to use all of your RAM, so you'd be spending more money.

I think you should get 8.1 Pro and forget about anything to do with 7.

And the Intel build is way better. It's very difficult to compare the $330 i7 to the $170 7850K without saying that the i7 owns it. for what you want an i7 is ideal.

I wouldnt be using all of the ram anyway in a VM though which is what I would be using it for.

I looked at the AMD FX's and for 8 cores they are not great processors. The FX 9590 is not much faster than my i7 in my laptop.

Will that one TI be able to max out all games on this monitor?

A 780 Ti will do that res just fine. While it's a very high resolution, the 780 Ti is a very high end card.

I would seriously reccomend waiting for the 8XX series though.

And by the way, I would go with a highly clocked i5 if you're planning on doing dual 780 Tis (or 880s if you wait). Maybe even X99. A 9590 may get the job done, but it's hard to say.

I think you'll be fine. That's a 3GB 780 Ti you have there - a very strong GPU paired with a relatively high amount of V-RAM.

What is (potentially) going to be your limiting factor here is the V-RAM, and going SLI wouldn't double that to 6GB - you would still only have 3GB even if you had two cards. But I don't think you need to worry.

@PCunicorn when are the new NVIDIA cards due to be coming out? I'm thinking about buying a 760 but if the 860 is going to be released shortly I might wait for that.

I read this morning that Gigabyte confirmed it to September/October

Good to know but I'm not going to wait that long. :p

There's never really a good time to buy anyway because there is always something better around the corner. Just buy what is best when you have the money. :)

Except when a new i5 is 2 weeks away :p

If you can wait OP, do it. Jason seems to be a slightly impatient person. He literally bought a i5 2 weeks before Sandy Bridge came out.

Im impatient too but I do not have the money to buy anything right now. Im hoping to build one by the end of the year so I will probably buy one of the newer gpus when they come out.

That was more to do with the fact that I didn't know Sandy Bridge was going to be coming out.

And I did buy my 2500K a month before the 3570K came, but the performance difference between those chips was going to be (and was!) tiny.

But, yes if you are more patient than I am, wait and see what the new 880s bring.
