building a new gaming computer on a budget

hey everyone, i'm looking to build my own gaming computer because i was told that was the best option. it will be my first time ever attempting to build a computer so i have no idea what to do. however i will be watching the tutorial videos from newegg on youtube while i attempt to do it.

basically i need a computer that will be able to handle diablo 3 when it comes out and also hopefully games like skyrim. please keep in mind i am on a budget of about 300-600 dollars maybe in the 700 range but the cheaper the better.

i don't need to play games on ultra settings to enjoy them, so if i can play diablo 3 and skyrim on at least medium with good fps i would be happy.

i know almost nothing about computer parts and building my own computer, every single time i ask someone to suggest a computer that i could get i've been told to make my own. so here i go :P

basically i need to know every single thing i need to get, because looking them up on my own is impossible since i don't know which parts are good and which arent. other than that any tips for a first time builder would be appreciated.

Pretty sure you'll want to go with AMD for price/performance.
Do you have anything that can be reused? cd/dvd burner? Windows? hard drive?
Already have monitor/keyboard/mouse?
What country are you in so we know where you can shop.
 
nope, i don't think i have anything to reuse. i am currently using a dell laptop. i do have a keyboard, mouse, and monitor though. and i'm living in the united states.

240 for mobo and i3 with ram, 250 for graphics card (e.g. 560ti), 50 for PSU, 160 for case and hdd. Do you have windows?
 
let's put your i3 to a phenom 960t, i3 is stuck at 3.1ghz and always will be, and costs 125. 960t, 110 bucks, and for 25 get a cooler master hyper 212 plus, and now its going 4-4.5ghz, now let's see who wins, so if he doesn't plan to spend another 200 or so upgrading in the future, for another 25 a 960t offers way better value in my book, plus possibility of 2 extra cores.
 
so for an extra 25 dollars and no upgrade potential, somehow that is a better option???? LOL

plus show me real world situation where a budget computer will be limited by an i3? Also then show me the massive improvement a 960 offers to justify its extra cost and socket redundancy?

He can get his budget computer now with an i3, run it as good as anything AMD has to offer WITH the added benefit of being able to put a i5 i7 and probably ivy bridge in the same socket. game set match.
 
how bout this, both options work and are good, you're just a big intel fanboy and if you haven't noticed, you're about the only person who says budget=intel, mid-range=intel, high-end=intel

What the hell does that mean. AM3+ Will run AM3 and AM3+ processors including any future Zambezi, plus the next Piledriver will be AM3+. Its fine if Intel has upgradability, but to claim AMD doesnt is misleading and not true

Can you list a build for the member like they asked? And explain to them why you would pick each part? Like they asked?
After you spend their 700, which isn't cheap as possible as they stated, let them know where the os is coming from since that question has been answered.
 
pretty much didn't understand any of that argument haha.

but ya, like Benny Boy said, i'd appreciate it if someone could list a build for me for the 400-600$ range that can do what i need it to do (stated in first post) if that is even possible.
