Posted this in Computer Cases Forum, but thought may be better suited for here though.Heres my first post:

Hi all.New to forum. So be nice to me
Heres my first Q: i am thinking of putting a case together to house, lets say ten of my EIDE HDD's and chain them together to act as one large Drive.
Is this possible?is this what a server is?if so,what do i need to accomplish this.A server case with a power supply of what wattage?,and what else would i need.and how and where would i find the ribbon cables to "Chain" them together?
Is this even possible?
Thanks for your Replies...Lerch

No it isn't possibe to connect 10 EIDE drives on the same cable. To connect a number of drives and make them act as one you must RAID them.

A server is just a computer that usually has a lot of harddrive space, and a lot of ram that provides services for computers that connect to it.

Aah! So i RAID them together eh?So thats what RAID is.
As i can see from Praeters readings,i believe i am looking at a RAID5 system,i suppose.Any advice on the RAID controler i would want to use.I am hoping of course to be as cheap as possible here. And what else is needed?
1)Case (2)Controller (3)?????
Do i need a scsi card? or can i just use my firewire or USB 2.0 to connect to?
Is there a "Ready Made" RAID Box out there that is worth buying rarther than putting together myself?
Thanks for your Advice,...Lerch

1. A case is optional although most people have cases
2. You'll need a controller ... whether its an onboard controller (unlikely to be RAID5) or an addin controller wont matter
3. SCSI card only required if you want SCSI RAID5. Its probably easier to get SCSI based RAID devices than IDE equivalents but the cost will be higher
4. For ready made stuff look at NAS/SAN :) (although they will be a pretty penny)

Hi Praetor.Appreciate the reply.And....
Thanks for all the info you have posted on the RAID and Power Supplies.
However a dunce like me still has questions. :o
You say a case is optional? How?
Heres what i have:12-WD1200JB HDD's.(ATA 100)
I need something to house them, right? And how is all this to connect to my OS PC?Via a parallel, serial port, firewire or USB2.0 PORT.
And as far as the power supply, well, what would you recomend?
Heres a card i think i need.Let me know what you think.

i need that big long sucker...the twelver. But serial or parallel i am not sure.is this what it is refering to hook it up to,Serial or Parallel?
i know i am full of questions, but i just never tried found the answers to this.
Thanks for your advice,
Lerch
