Building a Tablet PC?

Please dont tell me no. Its too close to Christmas.

At least theoretically if I befriended the Tablet PC department administrator at Fujitsu or IBM, I could be well on my way to assembling my own tablet PC.

But since I dont know anybody in high places. . . Is there any place or anyway to build my own version of a tablet PC? Ive seen plenty of barebone NB's from Asus to say the least, but how or where could I find one for a tablet PC? I really want to build my own tablet PC. It should be light, tough (but not Panasonic high price tough) comfortable to hold in tablet mode, with video camera and a keyboard that I can choose to my preference. Along with all the other major hardware configurable components.

There must be a source that wants to sell these PC tablet cases, if not just to the major manufacturers.

What's the point of building one? I have never seen a barebone's tablet PC, but you won't gain much by building one. I mean most of these only have places to add/upgrade the processor, RAM, and HD.

I think it was Mr. IBM who also once said, "Whats the point of building one?" And we both know what happened to him.

The point is, . . is that I have not yet found one that I really really like, admittedly, there's only about 8 to choose from (new models) and some have aspects of what I want and others dont. But, if 20,000,000 tablet PC's can be made each year, why not one more that has more of everything I prefer, and perhaps there are others who feel this way too? And out of the very limited few companies selling these tablets, I think only 2 or maybe 3 weigh under 5 pounds. If people didn't care about how much these things weighed, we might still be carrying around led bullet vests. Thats just one aspect. Anyway, if it's possible, if there is a way, I would like to know.

chances are good that you will never be able to change many options on a tablet PC... they are made mostly for notetaking on the run, they aren't made to be a fully customizable top-of-the-line unit... they are made for optimum battery life and portability...

I dont know why you say "they aren't made to be a fully customizable top-of-the-line unit" As far as I know, at this exact moment in time, the Core Duo is the top of the line processor for NB's. Since yesterday at least 4 out of the 8 tablet PC brands were customizable from 1.6 to 2.3 Ghz, with that processor.

Some are expandable to only 2gigs of RAM others to 4GB(not bad).

As far as the battery life is concerned. I have seen a wide range, some claiming more than 6.5 hours but many at a normal 2-4 hours.

And as far as portability is concerned. Have you ever tried lifting 5 lb dumbbells for more than a few minutes? After a few hours, days, weeks, you will be glad that you got a NB that weighs closer to 4 lbs than more, ateast I know I would. I think it would be very normal to carry around a very tidy, lightweight Tablet one day, either in addition or realistically, in subsititution to paper, notes, pens, highlighters, etc.

I know Im not going to be able to build one that has built in detachable phone, satellite antenna, scanner etc. anytime soon, but at least I can try to put the best elements of what already exists from each of the few other tablets out there into one.

I think I overread someone write something about actually "mould-forming" the material of the NB case. I don't know anything about it, but it sounds interesting and the price of the screens for anything less than 14" can't be more than $150- atleast not when extrapolating the cost of those foldable portable DVD players with TV screen which cost about $70 for an 8 inch screen.

Anyway keep this thread open and going if anyone can share more info or wants to get involved in developing this.

I see no good reason why Tablet PC's are not the more popular norm, at least when compared to non tablet NB's.
