Building badass gaming rig, need help

Yea ill probably will be going with the build that unicorn posted, it looked well balanced and seemed like a powerhorse. But ill have to add a sound and wifi setup with it also.... so ill shall be ordering it all 2nite :)

Oh but also I have a 320 gig western digital internal hard drive that i want all the information transfered over aaaand i have a 2tb external seagate hard drive as well :)

If you haven't already, don't bother with the sound card unless you have some nice speakers to match. Onboard audio is perfectly fine (unless you've got high-end speakers).

So um I found this amazing deal on a refurbished alienware x51, but the only thing about it is the video card isn't all that great. So i was thinking getting that with new video card. DELL Alienware X51 AWX5108490501SA No Screen Desktop PC Intel Core i7 3770(3.40GHz) 6GB DDR3 1TB HDD Capacity NVIDIA GeForce GT 640 / 1GB Windows 8 64-bit

Yeah you could go down that route, might also want to replace the power supply too since Alienware's probably aren't great.

I would be wary about buying a new PSU for an Alienware.
I had an Alienware about 5-6 years ago (Athlon X2 6400+, 4x1GB 800MHz and 9800GT :D) and I can say that the PSU was not standard ATX form factor. It was larger.
Don't know if it's still the case, but it would suck major balls to be in that situation.

No, just because they look similar doesn't mean they are very much alike. For $650, it will end up being $150 at least for a GPU, plus less RAM, and not very upgradable. I still say build your own. I have a $750 build pulled up for if you want it that beats the alienware, and the $1000 build trashes the Alienware

Ok your build looks kool and i know i should but that damn x51 is just too awesome, but i need to get a new video card cause it comes with the geoforce 640. I was thinking the geoforce gtx 650 ti boost with 2gb ddr5.... would that help it a little bit for more power? I might replace the ram also

I've gone pirated (not condoning it IT'S ILLEGAL) And did have some minor issues, another PC had it and was perfectly fine...its a hit or miss thing...I personally HATE windows 8...talk about a new OS essentially...its up to you (my apologies didn't look at suggested build, on my tablet) don't forget getting a good keyboard and mouse...just bought myself a 3lue mouse and its only $10...looks sick and works well

Alienware is way too flashy, overheating problems and overpriced even when refurbished lol...it's like buying a Microsoft version of the Mac...you pay 2grand...and you get the virus anyway lol....with the junk hardware! Seriously take these guys advise...do you want a computer today or a computer that's still good 5 years from today?

Side note, never heard of issues with TOO Much...anyone want to explain? There's overkill but is there an issue with too much if I use 12/16 GB sometime? (That's a rare occasion)

A 650 Ti boost is much worse then the 7850. Also, the X51 does not look that good at all, where the auora looks reasonable. Pick any case you want for you build, there are some way cooler then any alienware.

Its not the looks thats a big deal in my opinion...you need good airflow, room without being too big, functionality of USB and other tools....you can easily deck the computer with lights later but you can't add more USB's and better airflow lol...and u have to make sure the mobo will fit...if this is your first build, I recommend an out of the box build or a know build like the ones given...
