building computer but router very far. Help?

Hey all, I am building a desktop computer in my room, but my router is in my living room. What would you recommend for me to buy so I can connect to the internet? and without losing internet speed.

Is there anyway you can run an ethernet cable from router to your room? The only other way to do this would be to get a wireless repeater/extender to extend your wireless but if you plan on doing any online gaming, it wouldn't be the best option.

unfortunately I cannot extend. I was going to move the router to my room, but I don't have an Ethernet port on the wall in my room.
 
As I said earlier, you will either have to run an ethernet cord to your room or get a wireless repeater/extender. Where is your room in relation to the router? Is it on the same level of the home?
 
Maybe.

What is the model of wireless router you have? Are you directly above the router? You would need an adapter that has external antennas for better reception.
 
How far away from directly below is it? I still need to know what brand and model of router you currently have.
 
I have the standard Motorola Surfboard that Comcast game to us when we got internet package. Also, I can't do any holes in the wall or anything because it is a newly built house. It's dumb how they didn't install ethernet outlet in my room but there is one in the living room..
 
if you are feeling lucky why not get a 100 ft of ethernet lift the carpet around the edge of the wall and slowly lead it to your your pc thats what i did.
 
Unless that modem is also a wireless gateway, you'll need a wireless router. What is the model of modem you have?

Why not use Homeplug/Powerline?

If your house is a new build you'll have no issues with the earthing/ringmain in your house like I do :P
 
You would need to buy a twin pack of powerline adapters, plug one into a power socket near the router, and attach it to the routher via ethernet cable.

Plug the other one upstairs into a power socket, and connect that to your desktop via ethernet cable

Both devices will then talk to each other using the earth cables inside your houses electrical circuitry.

I think there is a bit of initial configuration to do with the 2 adapters, but should be pretty straight forward and explained inside the manuals.

There's no WiFi involved and it's essentially a cable run from your router to your Desktop PC, obviously the earthing will route back to your consumer unit like all electrical circuitry does, so it'll be longer than a straight ethernet cable from room to room, but inside a new house built it should be a fair bit faster and more reliable than going the wireless route, and also much better for gaming!

All existing Wireless/hardwired networks already functioning on the router will work as normal with this system installed too!

i've used power line before. no difference i could see from running a LAN cable direct (using a cheap brand). You'll forget about the slightly high costs after a day of use.

Would this also work with Windows 8? And I won't have any problems with it?
