building home server/HTPC

Right so it looks like I have 2 fried motherboards and 2 fried CPUs unfortunately so will have to start my server build again.
I am thinking of having:
Asus P8B75-M motherboard
i5 2500K CPU
OCZ Agility3 60G for OS
2 x 2Gb kingston valueRAM 1333Mhz
Gigabyte superb 550W PS
Seagate 1Tb + 2Tb barracuda drives

How does this sound to people to go together? Will primarily be used for streaming movies over the Wifi and played through the TV as well as occasionally having LANs here.

Thanks

Looks great, but get a power supply from ONLY, from top to worst: Seasonic, Corsair, XFX, OCZ, Antec, and NZXT. However, for a home server, you should have 16 GB of ram, 4 gb is way to small, 8 GB might be enough, but not reccomended, and 16 Gigs will give good results.

You really don't need that much ram unless it's a gaming server. Even then, unless it's high traffic you won't need 16GB. I've run a linux box for hosting CS:S, Minecraft, and Gary's mod (all at the same time) on 4gb ram.

The file server for adonis linux? Runs on 256MB of ram.

OP, what is this server to be used for? It's a lot easier to help gauge what parts to recommended based on what it needs to do. File severing is a lot different then a game server.

Hmmm... Well, thank you Nyx for extending my bare knowledge on servers. I would go with 8 GB on a larger gaming server, 4 to 8 people, 4 gb on 2 or 3, and 16 GB on 9-18 people. Those are my guesstimates.

Hey, it is just going to be for playing movies at home, file storage and the occasional LAN gaming at home. Will be accessible online as run Microsoft Home Server 2008 but mainly will just be for streaming the movies to 3 computers at most and 4 or 5 people when gaming. Was going to update the RAM to run 4 x 2Gb 1333Mhz cards eventually but I already have 2 of them that's why stated just 2.
Also already have that power supply from the last computer.

Cheers

VC?
What PS would you recommend then? I was thinking around 600W modular with 2 12V lines but unsure of what one to get exactly.

I doubt you'd really need a 600W unit to be honest. A 500W one such as the Corsair CX 500 would be enough (it's not modular though). The CX 600 is also a good unit if you want more watts, but again, it's not modular.

Are you talking about the Corsair CMPSU-500CXV2 500W? I can only find 1 place in NZ that has it.
What about something like the Antec EarthWatts EA-500D Green 500W, dual rail. Not modular which at end of day isn't a huge deal if it isn't modular. And more than enough Sata connectors as will need 3 straight away and want to end up having about 6-7Tb in he server.

well you can get 7 TB with 4 SATA plugs. 2x3TB, 1x1TB and 1 DVD drive.

I would try to get a unit with a single rail, but if you are only using HD3000, then the units with dual rails should be plenty fine.

Already have a 1Tb from an old external and a 2Tb in it so was just going to go from there. And going to have the flash drive too for OS and games.
Is single rail better than dual rail? I always thought dual rail was better...

Single rail tech is slightly more powerful, but either will work as long as you do not need massive power from one rail. Take a read at http://www.overclock.net/t/761202/single-rail-vs-multi-rail-explained

Thanks for that link, learned some more from that. will just stick to single rail then as it is suffice to my needs.
Going to upgrade to 4 x 2Gb RAM @1333Mhz. Also it seems as if an i3 2120 is all I would need for CPU for what I want and it is about $100 cheaper.
What do you think is better for the OS, windows server 2008 or 2011? I can't find much difference about the 2.
