Building Machine Question

Is it a good idea to take a Motherboard out of a Pre Built XP machine Equipped with a Pentium 4 @ 3.00GHz and Maximum Ram capability of 4GB and install it in a Mean looking ATX case, buy all relevant components, a new 160GB IDE Hard disk, Install 3 - 4 Gigs of ram and install Windows 7 on it? Is it a good idea as I havent got the money to buy a new motherboard etc except for the Hard Drive and Ram sticks, So pretty much transfer what I can into the new case and upgrade existing components

No. P4 already outdated. A dirt cheap new mobo will cost you $50, which support latest technology.
You would probably find the cost of getting outdated DDR/ DDR2 RAM and outdated P4 would end up spending more with less performance

What spares have you got? And what is your budget? What application are you using for the PC?

I read the question as, i cant afford to replace mobo and cpu, can i use it in another case and with other peripherals - answer of course.

Change of plan, if I said i wanted to do everything above but with an Install of Windows XP Professional, it should work out?

yes, but i will bet money it is a agpx4/8, which you can get a cheap one on newegg for like 20 probably.

if its AGP, then a HD3850 is the best.

If you are looking for a cheap PCIe card, then you should look at either a 9600GT or similar. You will need a PSU with 26A on the 12V rail for any graphics card.
