Building new computer after 5 years :o Please critique

Hello everyone,

It has been 5 long years since I built my last computer, and needless to say, I cannot wait to have this thing up and running. My current computer specs: AMD 3500FX, Nvidia 6600 GT, 2gigs crappy ram and a 75gig HD. :eek:

I have only acquired the PSU and the Case so far, anything else can be modified per everyone's suggestions.

Mobo: Looking for suggestions here.... I am a complete newb when it comes to overclocking but looking to broaden my horizons. I was thinking Asus or Gigabyte.

Is a SSD really worth it? I heard that by the end of the year, a company (forgot the name) was coming out with a "ground breaking" SSD that will drop the prices of SSD significantly.

Depending on your use, the bling factor your looking for and the cash you want to put out there's great ways to use SSD's.
I've built setups for guys who want to put as much cash as humanly possible and used that same drive (or even a smaller one) to boot off only - computer's on and windows has loaded in like 5 seconds, crazy! Then put a nice WD 1TB as a slave to use for all files.
The velociraptor - crazy fast, not my favorite though due to small cash and storage capacity.

Best bang for your buck is going to be a Western Digital Cav Green (or go Black if you want the speed) you can do a 1TB w/ 64mb cache for around $100.

The average user wouldn't really need the speed out of eaither of those drives and would easily fill the 80gb with pictures, music, videos, and the VR isn't too huge eaither. I could fill it with vacation pics alone!
 
what is your total budget for this build? what are you looking to do with it?

i would second the hd 5770. great gpu for the money.

i didn't see any links for the cpu. what are you looking to get (the heatsink also depends on this, although the v8 has many different compatibilities and is a great cooler)? off of the top of my head, i'd go with this:

for the ssd, it really depends on what you want to do with the pc. if you are just gaming then it wouldn't be necessary at all. but if you were doing other things then it might be worth it. for everyday use, the only real difference you'll see is the boot time for windows amd the transfer times for files. for gaming the loading screens will be shortened but you won't see any gaming performance increase.

No...fail. The Caviar Blue line outperforms the Green. Greens are 5400RPM drives meant for low power usage, which they partially succeed at.

Samsung's Spinpoint F3 line is the best bang for your buck. They're roughly on par with the Caviar Black drives in speed, and beat the Caviar Green drives in power usage.
 
I'm most likely going to get the i7 920, or if i decide to make the 2 hour trip to my nearest Micro Center, I will pick up the 930 for 199.95. Unless you guys think the AMD 965 BE is better???

As far as the GPU is concerned, would it be worth it to pay the extra hundred dollars to pick up a 5850?

the i7 is a better processor. The 965 has an unlocked multiplier making overclocking a bit easier. Both are good. If you want an i7 I would go with the new unlocked ones. They are a bit more spendy but I like having the multiplier unlocked. This uses dual channel memory so you can make up a few bucks for the cpu.

The only reason I'm not considering the i7 unlocked is because it is on the old 1156 socket -- if I ever plan on upgrading to a 6core processor, I would have to upgrade the mobo as well.

if you are willing to spend the extra i would definitely go with the hd 5850. it is a good improvement from the hd 5770 and worth the money.

for a gaming rig, like i said above, you really don't need an ssd. you would only see faster loading times and those really aren't that big of a deal (at least in my opinion). save the money and upgrade another component :)
 
Go for the 1366 Socket as all the 6 cores released till now are for socket 1366
if you are going with the socket 1156 then go witht the core i5 750
and as for GPU i would have to say BANG ON for the ati hd 5850
