Building new computer

Trying to build a gaming rig for around 500 to 600.

I've really been out of the computer world for a bit, are the intel boards still sturdy as all hell?

I just need the basics:

Mobo
GPU
CPU
RAM
Case
PSU possibly
HDD
CD/DVD drive

I think that should about cover it. Again, 500-600 budget, hoping to play some games like WoW, EQ2, Dragon Age: Origins, stuff like that. I've been messing around with some Intel mobo, core 2 duo, 2 gigs, 9800 gt, but I'm not sure if this stuff is worth it anymore. Thanks for anyone who puts any input.
