building new pc

Hi i am new to the forums and i need a new pc since mine is 4 years old. I dont have much computer building experience but i've been reading guides and it seems pretty fun and if i do mess up... i will call my uncle. I was wondering what is the best gaming hardware that i could get at 1,000-1,500 us dollars. I am using this computer for mostly gaming , some surfing on the web and typing essays. I need something that is reliable that would probably last me another 3 years :D, wont overheat and make loud fan noises, and is some sort what energy efficient. I will be playing mostly first person shooter games and some games like world of warcraft. I have a mouse keyboard and thats it..... I was wondering also if building 1 is cheaper than buying a PC.

Thanks,
Mc Hammer

Depending on how old the monitor is you can get for free, you would have a much nicer computing experience with the asus display. I would only change 3 things in bodaggits build:
Hard Drive

Memory:

Mobo:

And then possibly an aftermarket cpu cooler:

That was my experience. I had a 5 year old Dell Flat Panel that came as part of a Dell Budget system way back then. I played a few games on that and an old CRT tube with my new PC.

When I upgraded to a 1080 monitor - all I can say is " WOW ". I saw things that didn't exist before - and my gaming experience was like playing a whole new game. I actually knew what I was shooting as.

I'm still using one of the old monitors as a secondary right now - but the resolution is noticably different. IMHO - for gaming - a high resolution monitor of some sort is a must.

Yeah, that's a nice build those people have set up for you.
And, I'm just putting this out there.
I got a 19 inch widescreen 1440 x 900 monitor from dell. For 99 dollars. It's beautiful.

bomberboysk, was wondering whats the difference between the hard drive u picked and the 1 bodaggit picked thanks for your help btw.

About 2,800 RPM spin speed.

Bodaggit's post is the first time I've seen anybody actually suggesting that it would be worth buying the higher speed drive. IMHO think the Price / performance of the extra spin speed makes it pretty unnecessary for Most users.

But he knows mroe about PC's than I do - so I'll let him explain his reason for choosing a 10,000 RPM drive.

The read/write speed is pretty much the same, just a little longer access time than the 10000rpm. The caviar black also is half the price, and three times the size. The velociraptors are really only worth it if you have nowhere else you can spend money improving a system, which in your case you can get a better motherboard, memory, and even an aftermarket cpu cooler.

I c so thats why the motherboard and memory thingys are more expensive... thanks for the recommendation.

Was also wondering if instead of the Cooler Master HAF that Bodaggit mentioned:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119197

Would this also be a good choice too:

Just bringing this up because couple of my friends have it and they said its good but which one is better in your guys opinion or is there a better 1?

Thanks Jamin and Bomberboysk.

For noise level, it really depends on the case you pick. If you want something quiet antec makes a case for that purpose:

Even without it though, you will have a pc that is generally speaking more quiet than one from an OEM such as dell, as your using better quality cases/fans.

The HAF's are really good for cable management, as they have space for wires in the back and a lot of room to route wires.

Only downfall, no removable mobotray.

So i guess the Cool master HAF is a good choice... which 1 theres the 922 and 932 i know so far. Just found out my total is around 1800:eek: but it looks like a great set up.

Total: $1455+70= 1525
Tax: $1669.88
Shipping: 3 items with no free shipping Just guessing shipping would cost around.. $70?
Grand Total: $1739.88 - around there...
