Building new rig

ok, i currently have a P4 Northwood 2.66 and 1gig DDR400 ram with a 6800 agp card. Now, thats an ok rig for any of todays game, but i wanted better.

Now, i just kinda, bought this stuff really fast without studying it very deep(i have that problem, impulsive buyer) but i think i got a pretty selection of hardware.

Im keeping my 400watt X-Connect PSU and ram, but im replacing my cpu, mobo, hdd, and video card.

My new rig, which parts should be here tomorrow, will be:

AMD 64 X2 3800+
ASUS A8N-SLi Deluxe
320GB SATA Western Digital 7,200rpm hdd
and eventually a GF8

I wanna know if that sounds like a good rig set up. This is a giant leap for me. So i hope im making the right choices. Also, i just went out and bought a 3D Fusion 7300GS 256mb for the time being till the GF8 comes out and ill get the best one then. Hows the 7300GS stand against my 6800?

Your older 6800, even with AGP, will kick the 7300 a few miles away. The 7300 is just a budget card... if you are waiting for G8K, then i guess it will tide you over, but its just for ppl who dont game and dont want integrated.

I just looked at some benches with the 7300GS 256mb, it seems to be an ok card, scored bout 1k less in 05 and 06 then my 6800 did.......not bad really, i just wont be able to game at high res over 1024x768 and with AA. Thats ok though, it seems to be an ok card. Alot better then the still more expensive 5200! Yea, i bought this card for $86 at best buy and right next to it was a FX 5200 for $110!!!! Crazy or what?

It would have been better if you went Core 2 duo, much better performance than the X2's. Now if you get the best graphics card when the new ones come out, you'll get some bottlenecks.

Yes, but if i got the Conroe it woulda been alot more expensive, for one i would need to get new DDR2 ram which would be about $90 for a cheap set of 512s. So im saving there, i think the X2 3800+ which can easily be OCed to a 4200+ is the perfect budget cpu. Its not cheap, and its AMDs 2nd best processor. Thats why i went with AMD. Be nice if the overnight shipping actually shipped overnight...........

Don't get a 7300,its for people who are stupid and think OH MY GOD!7 SERIES GRAPHIC CARD!That must rule!!It doesn't,get the 7600GT or GS,they are pretty good,or get an ATI X1800 or X850 XT or something...just not the 7300

Yes, the X2 3800+ was a great cpu, but core 2 duo runs circles around them. But you got yourself a nice rig there, just not as upgradable.

Well, i can assure you i wasnt in the store going OMG 7 SERIES!!! The ONLY reason i bought this card was it was cheap, has more performance then my GF2 and will be capatible with my new rig until the GF8 is released. Believe it or not, this was the cheapest card Bestbuy had, $86.

Well, the difference is, the one you posted is 128mb, mine is 256mb, not that it would perform any better with the 64-bit memory bus.........but yea, i know, the only reason i did was cuz i didnt wanna order anything offline, cuz for me its a hassel since i dont have a card. And there wasnt much of a price difference.....it was actually $79 plus tax.

Ok, finally got all my new parts, all installed, working ok on an ATX psu, even though its an EATX mobo.......not sure how that is effecting it, but it seems fine. Anyway, my new hdd i bought says that its 320gb, but windows is only reading 127gb. There doesnt appear to be any jumper settings, and there wasnt any drivers for it........anyone know what could be causing this?

Also, i just noticed my 7300GS temps are really high, way higher then my 6800s were. Is this a problem? I havent done any modifying or OCing on the card at all. I dont even know what the stock settings are yet. But it idles at 60c and load is around 70c or above. When i saw the temps i felt the heatsink and back of the card and neither one felt very hot, not 70c hot. Is this normal for the 7300GS?

Those benchmarks are not to be trusted. Consider, Doom3, a game nVidia cards are good at, 7300GS 256MB

Oh and the base 6800

There's simply no comparison ... take 80fps vs 22fps.

Normal enough

Ok. Yea, i know my 6800 smokes it, but for $76, its not a bad card, you just have to lower the resolution and AA in some games, but it does ok.

Is your copy of Windows Pre-SP1? Update to SP1 or SP2, go into Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management, and assign the extra space to a partition from there (or you can allocate it to an existing partition using software like Partition Magic).

Ok, the second thing you mentioned worked, and now i can use the other part for storage and ditch my PATA hdd, unless i REALLY start running out of space, which i doubt it. Thanks.
